Homemade smudges from wild foraged sage. ♥

Well, January sure is shaping up to be a real darling of a month! I mean, as long as I keep the focus on my little life, and ignore the larger world of political upheaval and potential global catastrophe, that is. But I do mean that sincerely — in my own little life, things have been so lovely lately.

Here’s what the second week of 2017 has looked like:

Nourishing.

Hard at work practicing his math (which he loves — where did this little person come from??)

We had an amazing tasting with our favorite distributor, featuring small-scale family-made wines from Hungary, Croatia, Georgia, Slovenia, and more. Can’t wait to get these amazing wines on the list at our little vegan wine bar!

Quiet mornings for self care: face masks and coconut chai green smoothies.

And busy busy nights, scarfing down dinner in the corner of the kitchen at the wine bar.

And now, it’s time for the one, the only, Le Love List!

Drive-in movies! Jeremy and Waits and I all stuffed into the back of the Subaru, in a cuddle puddle piled high with pillows and blankies, vintage “flower power” pump-top serving thermos full of steaming hot peppermint tea, snacks and hats and slippers and snuggles and the cool night air on our faces. Truly madly deeply, the drive-in is my verymost favorite way to spend time with my family these days. ♥ // Roasted garlic. // Wearing high heals regularly for the first time in my life (’bout time I just embraced the fact: I am tall as fuck). // Waits asking (again) if he and I could get married when he grows up. // Aged Earl Grey. // Reading to Waits while he eats his breakfast before school. // Waits reading to me at night before bed. // Hanging out with super empowered women. // Tempeh. // When the wine bar is really busy. Ugh, best feeling!! // Planning my birthday. // Getting ready for a weekend away with my honey. // Waits and I had a bit of a car trip over to a neighboring town to cash in some Target gift cards. Instead of putting on music (ALL MOANA ALL THE TIME, these days), and in honor of Martin Luther King Jr’s coming birthday, I put on my favorite of his speeches. His “I’ve Been To The Mountain Top” speech. His last speech before he was assassinated. We talked a little about who MLK was, and then we listened to the speech, and then afterwards we talked about what it meant. He told me “So mama, if I was alive back then, I would have been on the black people’s side. I would have fought with them.” And it was an amazing opportunity to talk about what’s happening in America, right now. I told him that we are entering another Civil Rights Movement, and that he and I will get our chance to stand up and fight for what’s right. And I promised him that we would.

So yeah, if you’re a parent, I really recommend sharing that speech with your kiddos. It’s short, powerful, and a perfect conversation starter. ♥

Alright guys, now it’s your turn! I really love reading your own Le Love Lists, so please leave them down in the comments below. What are the little things in your life that make you smile this week?

Happy Sunday, I hope you have a most wonderful week!

Gifts From The Garden In Winter (AKA — I Heart California)

January 10th, 2017 - posted under: The Farm » Flora

I don’t mean to brag, but man I love our California winter growing season. Southern California in December, January, and February, is a lot like many other parts of the country in early to mid autumn, I think. Temperatures reach the high 50s and into the 60s during the days, and drop to the low [...]

Sunflowers in January (Oh how I ♥ CA). Is this overly ambitious? Perhaps, yes. Maybe totally. But there it is. If I have one “resolution”for 2017, it’s that I’m hoping to make photography a much bigger part of my life again. And in accordance with that, I’m intending to do one of these posts every [...]

Homemade Vegan Empanada Dough

I found myself tasked with making 100 empanadas. ONE HUNDRED! How do I get myself into these things? Well, like this: I was dropping Waits off at school one morning, back in early December, and I casually asked his teacher, “Hey, I’m going to Costco this afternoon, is there anything you need?” Because they often [...]
