The Weekend Send-Off

August 5th, 2011 - filed under: Furthermore » Feedback

Hello my dears! Just a quick one this week, as it’s currently 12:54 in the am, technically Friday morning. After I go to bed, and then wake up again this same morning, I will be officially, absolutely, unequivocally, on vacation. And it has been a *long* time since that’s been the case.

Shasta county for family fun times, followed by 4 days int he SF bay area, and then a leisurely drive home with a stopover in lovely Ashland. YESSSSSSSSS!

Bring
It
On

Le Love List

1. Candy-Colored Hair.    I’m a busy lady and like many moms, I tend to fall into the trap of neglecting myself. It’s been . . . er . . . too long . . . since I’ve dyed my hair, but this morning during Waits’ nap I slathered my head with a layer of crimson pigment (Manic Panic, here’s why), and then after he went to bed tonight (~10 hours later), I washed it out. My quasi-curly locks are now a lovely shade of vermillion, and as always, I finally feel like myself again. *sigh*

2. VACATION.    Seeing my dad. Seeing my brother and his wife. Waits playing with his cousins. Shasta in the summertime. Eating at my brother’s restaurant, where even though it’s in a tiny town in the way way rural mountains, he still serves tofu and sushi to cowboys – and they love it. Mountain air. Reading. Playing tourist in new co-ops. SeQuential Biofuel, an all-natural, renewable, sustainable, vegan-friendly GAS STATION (oh, Oregon!). California (my home state). The ocean. San Francisco and its quirky, hilly neighborhoods. Being unencumbered. For-reals relaxing. Seeing loved ones and dear ones and reconnecting with very old friends. The east bay, and taking my son to the places that I grew up loving: Tilden Park, Indian Rock, the Lawrence Hall of Science. Telegraph even though it’s cliche. The UC Berkeley campus. Memories of my mother. Haight street even though it’s cliche. Golden Gate Park. A super fancy-pants dinner at Millenium, where my very old friend happens to be the manager (serendipity, we were intent on going there before I found out!). All the amazing vegan food in the bay area. Our little Subaru that could. AC. My brother in Ashland. The Ashland co-op, my very favorite co-op ever. Getting home after an entire week away, and having a whole weekend to decompress from your vacation. Really happy dog kisses.

3. Veganism.    Because now it’s 1:34 am and I know I’ll have to wake up on toddler time, but I do this pretty much every night and somehow manage to come up with all the energy I need. High-raw veganism is RAD.

Alright guys, now it’s your turn – tell me what you’re loving this week!

My darlings, this happy little post will stay at the top of the page all weekend, so stop by any time to leave your Love List, ask a question, or offer some feedback! Or if you’re new, please introduce yourself and say ‘Oi!’! This is your community, so get involved!

~~~
I’m going to do my very best to maintain a posting schedule next week, but really who knows how it will go with life on the road! It all depends on wi-fi availability and baby nap coordination, so don’t go worrying if I appear to have disappeared. I’ll be back soon, and boy do I have some amazing posts lined up for you guys!
To a memorable and magical weekend!
    This week I am loving experimenting with my new dehydrator and lots of raw vegan meals – especially huge green smoothies!
  • Beens
    1) I am loving my new job – something I never, ever thought I’d say! I actually wake up and don’t have a sense of impending doom nor do I get the Sunday night blues, it’s lovely!
    2) Fresh strawberries from the farmer’s market – they’re about to be transformed into a beautiful conserve and consumed at afternoon tea with a dear friend who is visiting; thus forming (3) on the love list!
  • http://www.shesgotaknife.blogspot.com ~L~
    1. New kitteh…She is adorable, although she’s constantly into trouble at the moment. Spray bottle ftw.
    2. Dedication…I’ve exercised 4 days in a row now (today will be 5)…It’s not much, but its a start and it’s 4 days I DIDN’T sit on my ass.
    3. My new, super-cool, vintage blender I got at the flea market for $15…Glass pitcher and olive drab base, oh yeah.
  • http://joyfulyogawithtara.blogspot.com/ Tara
    1. Blackstrap molasses- Tomorrow I will officially be 5 weeks postpartum and my lovely blackstrap has been giving me the extra boost that I need to stay feeling energized and well.
    2. A night out for music- Thanks to my amazing pops for watching the little one so my husband and I can get out of the house and enjoy some live music this weekend. I know that it will do us good to have some time for just the two of us and I know it will feel great to catch up with friends that we haven’t seen for quite some time now.
    3. Actually getting some sleep last night- Getting 5 whole hours of sleep with a 5 week old is like a miracle from Heaven. I never thought I would feel refreshed on 5 hours, but wow…I feel great.
    Wishing everyone a great weekend!
    Did you know Vermillion Lies is a band? I discovered them after I discovered what color “Vermillion” was…
    Love list:
    1.TODAY IS MY LAST DAY OF COLLEGE. It’s been 6 tumultuous years, including a year off. I will promise myself that I will bask in this achievement, as I so rarely celebrate what I accomplish.
    2. IMPROV. Changing my life. Bringing me new amazing friends. Making me a better person. Thank you Groupon for giving me a cheap class last year – never would have thought it leads to everything I’ve gotten from it so far!
    3. Mint.com, budgets, and slowly watching the debt go away. Whew. I’ll get there!
  • RK
    1. Forgiveness. Coming to terms with past situations. Loving, letting go and forgiving.
    2. New beginnings. I’m re-starting school in the Fall to finish up my degree. Nervous and excited but mostly grateful.
    3. My husband. His unconditional love could get me through any situation. He is an amazing human being and I am so happy he’s mine.
    I hope your week is so much fun!!
  • http://windycityvegan.wordpress.com Monika {windycityvegan}
    Have a great vacation!
    1. Opportunities. It never really dawned on me to apply to out-of-state law schools until my husband gave me the push I needed. And now I’m overwhelmed with the possibilities! Even if I stay right where I’m at and attend the school I originally had in mind, it feels so good to explore every option out there (including schools in PDX and the PNW, squeeeeee!!!).
    2. Coaching. I just started coaching a new crew for a November HM, and despite the heat we’re having a blast.
    3. My vertigo. If I wasn’t still having vertigo issues in the pool, I wouldn’t have “wussed out” and started using a kickboard to help keep my head above water. But the one-armed drills I’ve been doing are giving my shoulders and triceps an *amazing* workout.
  • TeniseRae
    I love that you’re stopping in Ashland!!! I’m sure you already know where the co-op is, right??? :D
  • http://absolutelyayurveda.wordpress.com Aisha
    Hi there!
    I have been a LOOOOONNNGGG time reader, but too shy to introduce myself…here goes!
    My name is Aisha and I am currently living in Berkeley with my husband and studying to be an Ayurvedic practitioner. I am also an herbalist and can usually be found either wildcrafting in the woods or mixing potions in the kitchen.
    Things I love:
    Ayurveda, veganism, radical politics, reading, knitting, hiking, dancing under the moonlight, naps with my kitty, meditation and trying to enjoy life every day!
    I blog about my journey through health+wellness over at Absolutely Ayurveda (link is on my name) and I am super grateful to be a part of this community!
    Ok, that’s all folks. Enjoy your weekend :)
    Aisha
  • http://eerosa.wordpress.com erosan
    1. eating as much of anything and everything I want… and still watch my weight go down like the stock market when it crashed a couple of years ago. ^_^
    my tracker:
    https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Avnz08GSjp4NdFZ4LWpjc0llTXJNdHR2TlZlVEtVbVE&hl=en_US
    2. Did I mention I am running again? As always, I stopped cuz I’m an idiot, because I simply LOVE running and not being able to stress about daily life because I’m too worried about breathing.
    3. Air Conditioners… not very eco friendly, but when the temperature is still above 30 C (86 F) after 7.30 pm, and the baby is sweating like he just did 2 hours of cardio, ACs are a blessing.
  • Moira
    Wonderful! So excited for you guys. A couple more ideas… in case its hot in Berkeley and you need a quick ice cream fix, Gelateria Naia on Shattuck and Center St has a LOT of vegan options, soy and sorbet. YUM!
    And if you’re in need for coffee and a quick vegan snack, the People’s Cafe in Haight-Ashbury is great.
    Safe travels!
    Oh I need to make a love list because this momma is tired and uninspired…..
    1. Seemingly heathly and unencumbered pregnancy that has now moved out of the ugly morning sickness phase.
    2. Veggie soup from all the abundance that is my garden and some organic supplements that I did not grow is year. It may be hot out but my soup was hotter, especially with a dash of cayenne.
    3. Cuddle time with my two toddler boys, morning noon and night. Ahhhhhh. “mom will you lay down and cuddle with me?” says my 3.5 year old. Of course!
  • Sara
    Just stumbled, and I HAVE TO KNOW, did you get your blog title from the Tom Waits song? Because if you did…that’s awesome.
  • Tine
    I am loving the fact that the most important people in my life have given their support in my decision to quit my increasingly toxic job. Turning my two week notice in tomorrow! There is such a weight off my shoulders already, I’m so excited for the future!
  • http://jenthevegan.wordpress.com Jen
    Have a great holiday, you definitely deserve it!
    I am loving the occasional bits of sun we get during an english summer, houmous (I always love it!) and seeing flowers bloom in my garden!
    Happy weekend all!
  • Meghan
    So… remember how during a WIAW you posted that one brazil nut has the rda of selenuim? My husband has been making me eat a brazil nut a day. LOOK WHAT YOU’VE DONE!!!! :-)
    I have a question rather than a love list (I love things. Maybe I’ll post a list tomorrow!) Is Waits still eatin’ no sugar except what happens to occur in fruit and stuff? Do you have problems with family or friends on this? Being sugar-free at least for the first few years of life sounds quite sensible to me (kids that think fruit are tasty sweet things will probably make better choices than ones who are used to getting their sweet fix from cookies, I reckon!) but I can imagine this being a little… I dunno, tough to manage when people outside of my nuclear family get involved. Back in the day you had tactful ways of dealing with baby gifts, so I thought you might have a tactful way to deal with people who want to give your kid a cookie. :-P
  • Julie
    Happy travels!
    You’ve definitely got to check out Scream Sorbet in my Oakland neighborhood (Temescal) — the pistachio and the beet-lemon are especially amazing.
  • Moira
    My love list:
    1. We just finished painting our kitchen cabinets shabby chic green and blue. yes for gettin’ our artsy skills on!
    2. Made a rad almond-cheesy veg gratin.
    3. Above pretty much sums up our weekend.. I love that, too.
  • http://bluknotsoriginals.blogspot.com @tishushu
    Oh @tishushu, always late to the party…
    My List:
    1. CSA’a- I just recently (last week) joined a CSA here in Atlanta. Every week is a surprise! This week I got okra, sweet potato greens, tons of basil, eggplants, and fresh flowers! And they are really helping disadvantaged people by allowing them to use EBT cards for purchase! That’s what I really love. So many people think food stamp recipients cant make good food choices. They have to have access, right?
    2. My Dad- My dad, uncles, and cousin went skydiving yesterday! My dad is so adventurous! I want to do it now, so he’s paying for me to do it on my birthday! :)
    3. Family- A lot of my family came to support my dad, uncles, and cousin as they dove! Its always good to be around my family, even if they work my nerves.
    4. Acknowledgment (I’ll explain)- My son lives with his dad now (his choice) and I always wonder if the values I taught him still ring true, i.e. respect, pride, etc. He is such a great kid. My gf was sitting in the car as I drove up to the ex’s house, dropping off the girl child for the weekend, and my son went out to the car to talk to her. It was so sweet. Not that they dont know each other, they really do, but that was so unexpected, and I didnt know he had done it until I got back in the car and she told me. She said I raised a good son. I beamed!
    5. Opportunity- I interviewed for a job Friday, and just sent a small portfolio… Wish me luck!
    Best to all,
    Tishana
    Hello, I’m relatively new. I’ve been checking out this fun blog for a few months off and on.
    1. I’m loving homemade tea bags this week. I got the idea from your blog and modified it according to how I needed it to work but I’m enjoying every minute.
    2. I’m loving the idea of veganism. I don’t think I’m ready for anything quite that all encompasing but raw food and a healthy conscious towards food shopping/growing is getting my fiance so excited.
    3. I’m loving my diy mindset. I think its not just a hobby but a character trait and I’m ready to dive in!!!
  • http://www.greenfoodgreenthumb.com/ Lindsay
    Beautiful post, and I loved reading what you are looking forward to on vacation :) I’m on vacay too and lovin’ every minute of it!
    1. Ditto on the VACATION. Experiencing the Minnesota northwoods with family and friends. Pontoon rides on the lake, bonfires at night, hiking through trails in the woods, picking fresh raspberries, listening to the loons on the lake, playing gin rummy with my grandparents, and bonding with my brothers. Loving every second :)
    2. Cooking in my father’s kitchen! Enjoying lots of yummy vegan dishes and desserts with my family (it’s hard to impress midwesterners with vegan meals but somehow I’ve managed!) ;)
    3. Fresh produce. The smell of ripened tomatoes, and cucumbers fresh out of the garden. So lovely.
    Enjoy your vacay Sayward :) Your lil one will surely have a ball!
    My home’s inside water line is GI pipe. Supplied water contains with lot iron. This iron makes barriers to flow water. I have been suffering a lot. Can this home made drain cleaning method help to clean to GI pipe’s inside’s iron. Or do you have alternative idea.
    @ Kate – I’ve never heard of that band, but CONGRATS on finishing college! Wow that must feel amazing! =D
    @ TeniseRae – Oh yes, the Ashland co op is my absolute favorite co op EVER.
    @ Aisha – Hello lady, welcome to the site! Also, I had so much fun eating my way through Berkeley, and I am officially jealous!
    @ Sara – YES! So rad you caught that, I think you’re the first one.
    @ Meghan – Yup, Waits is still sugar-free. So far we haven’t had much trouble with it, I think mostly because people know that I’m super healthy about food and they know better than to give without asking me first. The most awkward issues I’ve had are with other [vegan] mommas who offer some of what their kid is eating, and I can’t use the old “oh not vegan” excuse. It’s difficult to navigate because you don’t want to give the feeling of “what you feed your kid is not good enough for my kid” or something. You know, people feel really judged around food. Anyways, a nice big smile and a simple “no thanks, we’re good” has been pretty effective. Waits can’t have wheat so that’s helped with turning down sugary neon colored cereal snacks. Man. I don’t know though, it’s going to get tougher. I think the best you can do is just “own” that you’re a health freak, play it up, maybe be a little self deprecating and tease yourself about it, but own it and be clear, and SMILE.
    As an aside though, NO one should EVER give young children ANY food without asking their parents first, period. Allergies are too rampant these days. Waits is allergic to avocado of all things, you know? Who could guess that? So most people are pretty good these days, about asking the parents first. And those that aren’t . . . well, they need a [polite] lesson. Seriously, it’s a matter of safety. Not cool.
    So that helps too. =)
