“To me, photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place . . . I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.”
~ Elliott Erwitt

It’s our family ritual, this Saturday morning farmers market. Damian, Waits and I, the bustle of the bazaar, and all that local Portland produce. We have our weekly favorites (leafy greens, salad veggies), and we always pick up something new and special. The market is so inspiring: the perfect way to start the weekend!

My dears, I want to share these images with you, so that they may inspire you as my market always inspires me. Let me know if you like them – I’d love share them regularly but only if there’s interest.

    of course! mega interested!

kinda interested in what bought and what you plan to cook out of it… might be cool to see veggies go from market to the kitchen to the table. :)

*Sigh.* I miss going to the FM on a regular basis, but I rarely have the time anymore. We have our own micro farm, which is reeeeeeaaally time consuming (plus the whole point of growing such a huge amount of our own food is to cut out the cost of buying any…). HOWEVER, my curcurbits were dessicated by squash beetles and I need to do something with all of my dill, so I guess the upside to the beetle crisis is that I can load up on cukes at the market until my second round of plants start producing!

I would be happy to see more of these photos. I like close-ups of groups of vegetables and fruits for some reason. I don’t know why that is so appealing (besides the fact that they are beautiful). Of course, the pictures of people are also appreciated. (It’s cute seeing Waits grow.)

Love the photos. I loved the Portland market, and wish it carried over to other cities… it’s impossible to find a good market in Central Florida as all the produce comes from South America. Portland makes it easy for people who give a damn!

*sigh* I miss my brief period of living on the park blocks when I went to Portland State.

your baby is so friggin adorable! When I have wee ones, I can only hope I catch them at the same awesome moments you’ve managed to capture Waits.

    The pictures were beautiful

I love farmer’s market pics – and farmer’s markets! Seattle in summer is awesome because the different neighborhoods all take turns having markets so there’s one somewhere every day!

  • cassie.

Love love love the pictures! Most adorable family, ever.

What was the new-to-you fruit or vegetable you picked up this week?

I love farmer’s market pictures! Especially seeing what fruits and vegetables you can find in Portland vs what I find in San Diego!

I would love to keep seeing your market photos. I miss farmers markets so much, but I don’t know of any near me… or anywhere in Japan for that matter.

I love these photos too! They impart joy!

Yay, I’m so glad you guys are into it! I’ll make it a regular thing then. It’ll be fun to see how the produce changes through the seasons!

@ Kate in SB – I love that idea! I’ll start taking pics of the food I make from the market. Miss you lady!

@ Lynn D – Sylvan berries! Mmmm, they were *so* good, like a big, super-sweet blackberry. They were so tasty we just ate them plain, then the next morning I had a small bowl of berries in homemade almond milk and sprinkled with hemp seeds. YUM

@ Everyone – You guys are awesome! =D

Those are awesome photos! Everytime you post about the FM, it makes me wish we could afford to go! Also getting hubby out of bed to go would be way more work than I’m willing to do.

lovelovelovelove! farmers is my favourite! i just picked up some pluots and a flower salad mix and an abalone shell to sew in a dread at ours on tuesday. :)
i think the best thing about farmers markets, besides all the delicious food and awesome things, is the sense of community. it’s beautiful. and being able to trade leftover pastries with a few people for asparagus/cauliflower/spinach/etc. haha. that’s always fun!

I LOVE farmer’s market photos – definitely post! Good way to start the weekend yes… but visually reliving it is a good way to start the week if you ask me. You should also post what your new item was, what you made with it, and if it was awesome or iffy ;)

Gorgeous fam Sayward! It’s amazing how having a baby makes you think “what did i do before YOU?!” I’m still in awe of my 6 1/2 year old as though she’s a newborn.LOL!
Must say, i love the pacific northwest culture. My hubby’s brother lives in Seattle and hubby’s considering re-locating. He’d be near his bro and he knows how much I’d fit in out there!

Awesome, thanks for all the encouragement guys. I’ll definitely keep posting these, and include more info on what I got and how I used it. Maybe recipes too – fun!
