And now for something a little different; a departure from the citrus and summer fruit we’ve been blending into our cocktails so far. We’ll call this one “The Woodsman” because, well, it just tastes a little bit woodsy. Like something a woodsy bearded fellow would sip on the porch of his log cabin somewhere high up in the mountains – liquors infused with herbs that grow wild in the woods around him.
Or something.
I don’t know, this one needed a for-real moniker. A drink like this deserves such a thing.

Let’s get one thing straight right off the bat: this is a serious drink. This is a drink for people who like their drinks to taste like drinks, if you know what I mean. Martini lovers, Manhattan swillers – this is a drink for you. Those of you who are more of the Margarita/Punch/Daiquiri persuasion, well you may want to skip this one (and there’s nothing wrong with that!).

The Woodsman is a delicate blend of liquors and sodas. You’ll need (serves 2):
1 ounce thyme-infused vodka (see infusion instructions here; herbs take about a week)
1 ounce rosemary-infused vodka (see infusion instructions here; herbs take about a week)
1 ounce Oloroso sherry
1 ounce Carpano Antica (or other sweet vermouth)
2 ounces bitter lemon
2 ounces club soda

Combine the vodkas, sherry, and vermouth in a shaker with ice and shake vigorously to combine. But make sure the lid is on tight, so that maybe the whole thing doesn’t fly off and spray booze all over the kitchen and yourself. Because that would be ridiculous . . .
Pour into two glasses, dividing evenly. Add 1 ounce of bitter lemon and 1 ounce of club soda to each glass.

I served these garnished with a cocktail onion skewered on a sprig of fresh rosemary. An orange twist would be nice as well.
In the spirit of experimentation, I would love to see this made with various other herbal infusions. I’m thinking sage, oregano, even dill or parsley. The sky’s the limit!

Cheers!

Hello weekend! You are beautiful and fantastic and warm and sunny and oh, how I love you!!! Lately my weekends have been all filled up with Waits, and that’s been making them extra special. These are the beach days of summer, the beach days I always dreamed of having once I became a mother. My [...]
This pudla is perfectly patriotic for the festivities on the 4th. So a few months back I wrote about my love affair with pudla, that savory amazing high-protein gluten-free soy-free chickpea pancake that’s become the superstar of my breakfast repertoire. I love my pudla stuffed with veggies like mushrooms and spinach and onions, then topped [...]
I generally try to avoid Pinterest. Just as a rule. Because it’s dangerous there! For a busy person with much too much web to surf already, Pinterest is like a no-mans-land of endless, utterly gleeful time suckage. Recipes! Decorating! CRAFT PROJECTS! You know how it goes. It’s basically the holy grail of design porn, which [...]
We wait patiently for it – ever so patiently – all year long. Because it’s just not the same out of season. But when the world begins to heat up, the eager anticipation sets in. Because we know it’s coming. Cool and sweet and refreshing and really, is there anything more superbly summery than WATERMELON? [...]
