What We Ate Wednesday: President’s Day Adventuring

In before midnight, so it’s technically still Wednesday! Huzzah!

So, I recently wrote a “Life Update” post, and I ended by asked you what kind of stuff you missed reading here on the blog. A lot of you said “WIAW!” and I realized that it’s literally been almost a year since the last time I did one of those. So okay, I guess I’m overdue!

Last weekend was a 4-day holiday weekend, and I had Waits the whole time, which was great. But by the time Monday rolled around, we were all feeling pretty cramped and cabin fevered. So, I made sure to fill the day with outdoors and adventuring! Here’s what it looked like, the whole little family together on President’s Day:

The Matriarchy Is Coming

The boys let me sleep in, and it was such a lovely slumber. I woke up lazy and late, around 9 am, and got to enjoy my coffee and some kitty cuddles all alone in bed. Really great way to start the day.

Jeremy and Waits had already eaten breakfast by the time I emerged, but I’m told that Jeremy had 2 slices of whole grain toast with coffee, and Waits had a blueberry muffin with oat milk.

Our plan was to shower and get ready, then hit the road for a short little road trip down to Ojai. I knew we would all get peckish before lunch, so I made a giant family-sized smoothie.

IMG_2831

Almond milk, spinach, banana, strawberry, mango, and pea protein. With an array of probiotics and supplements (see this recent post for which supplements and why).

IMG_2836
I blend it all up, then pour Waits his portion. Then I add these super adaptogens — Maca and Ashwagandha — which Jeremy and I are using to support our over-worked adrenals.

With our mason jars fully loaded, we were ready to hit the road, for a beautiful drizzly drive through the southern California back country. It’s one of my favorite places on earth. ♥

This picture up there doesn’t look like anything special, but it’s actually amazing. I have shared many pics over the years of hiking in this river bed. It’s all white rocks and sage scrub brush. Dry as a bone. I’ve been bringing Jeremy there for years, and the first time I told him that I used to see a real river rushing through there as a kid, he didn’t believe me! I’ve been bringing Waits here his entire life, and he’s never seen water.

But now? Finally? WATER! It’s been pouring rain here this winter, and it feels like our drought is finally beginning to subside. Thank you Universe!

Lunch at one of our favorite Ojai vegetarian eateries, The Farmer and the Cook. These two goofballs . . .

IMG_2852
Jeremy and I split this cup of simple bean and veggie stew.

IMG_2881
I loooove their hand-made burger! It’s a simple lentil and veggie patty, but they serve it up right with cashew cheese, avocado, and all the fixins! Plus they have this tomato vinaigrette that’s to die for.

IMG_2886
Jeremy got the exact same thing as me, and Waits got this PB&J with apple slices.

After lunch we were off to our favorite Ojai outdoor play area, which is this huge park in the middle of “downtown” (Ojai is teeny tiny, so “downtown” is sort of funny to say). There’s a monster playground, an astro turf hill for cardboard sledding, all sorts of fun interactive equipment, plus an amphitheater. It’s pretty awesome.

After we’d gotten good and tired (and properly water-logged), it was time to head back home to Santa Barbara. Waits had outdoor school — his very favorite — scheduled for that afternoon/evening.

We dropped Waits off with is fellow feral tiny people and the brave, barefoot hippies who escort them into the wild, and Jeremy and I hurried home for some down time. He napped.

I worked, and had a cup of tea, and ate some apple slices with peanut butter.

Right around twilight I set back out to fetch the boychild. This is what he looks like when I pick him up from outdoor school, every time:

Mud monster.

From there it was home to give the kid a bath and throw on some fresh clothes, then right back out again. We were meeting my papa for dinner!

My papa. And a big beautiful greek salad at Pizza Guru, mmmmm.

IMG_2970
Close up. Alllll the goodness.

IMG_2982
Super lucky dude with his very own tofu + kalamata olive pizza.

IMG_2986
And our pie: vegan white sauce, vegan cheese, rosemary potatoes, mushroom medley, tofu, and garlic. With vegan ranch YOU GUYS OMG.

The food was delicious and the company was aces, but by the time our bellies were full, we were all beat. Long day!

We said our goodbyes and headed home. Jammies and face washing and tooth brushing . . . and tea. Always tea.

I’ve been making Waits this bedtime tea, sort of a homemade soothing/sleepy time/digestive aide bedtime tea, and he absolutely loves it. (Is this something I should blog in detail?)

IMG_3003
Homegrown chamomile from my garden!

IMG_3007
Happy sleepytime kid. ♥

After Waits was asleep I had a couple of mugs of tea myself, while working for a few more hours into the night.

It was a really good day.

YAY! I love your “WIAW”-posts :-) though I have to admit, that I did not notice that you did not post any for a while, because I like the other topics on your blog just as much and especially everything DIY! So yes, if you don’t mind, I’d love to hear more about that bedtime tea concoction ;-) I still have some dried chamomile that I foraged last summer, and since I discovered how much better it tastes compared to the teabag-stuff, I’m always looking for new ways to use it :-)
    much love,
    Judith

Love these posts! That pizza looks amazing. And yes, would love more info on the tea!

Sayward, I read your book when I was pregnant five years ago and happily started reading your blog, too. I’m embarrassed I’ve never commented on how much I enjoy peeking into your lovely life (and reading your honest take on it). I wanted to tell you that I so deeply appreciate you, and that so many of your posts have truly helped in raising my little vegan monster (now a four-and-a-half-year old – he’d want you to know the half part – ball of boy energy). Your last post on vegan kids’ teeth was SO helpful – and I would love to know about Waits’ bedtime tea. Thank you for all that you share. Lots of love from sunny central Florida, Erin

Your tea reminds me when I was a kid I’d walk a mile to the school bus stop and there was a patch of wild chamomile on the side of the road. When it bloomed I’d pick and chew the buds up. Kinda gross in retrospect being on the side of a road but at least it was a rather quiet country road back then ;) That picture of Waits after school is the absolute best, just pure wild heart bliss! Yessss: The Matriarchy is coming!!! <3 <3 <3

Outdoor school sounds amazing. Also..OMG that PIZZA. :)

  • Amanda Louise

I’d love a post on the tea! And more info on the Ashwagandha powder. I just heard about it on a podcast a week or so ago and ordered it, and I’ve been using 1/4 teaspoon at night in turmeric tea.

  • Ellie

Would love to know about the tea!

outdoor school WAAAT! I mean, not only am I jealous of that for my kid, but for myself too! Sounds awesome!

It’s a really, really amazing program and I feel so lucky we have it! Waits would go every day if he could. ♥

    I’ll do a post!

I’ve heard great things about ashwaganda, it’s an Ayurvedic herb that’s been used for thousands of years. How long have you been using it? It might take some time to feel a real difference.

I’m planning a post on tea soon!

  • http://bonzaiaphrodite.com/ Sayward Rebhal

    It was SO GOOD!

  • http://bonzaiaphrodite.com/ Sayward Rebhal

    Will write up soon!

His outdoor school is run by a local nonprofit, it’s an afternoon outside one day per week for a few hours. Always outside in nature, no matter the weather. They rotate around to various parks and preserves and wilderness spots, beach, mountains, forrest, etc. It’s pretty amazing and he always gets supremely MUDDY! =D

  • http://bonzaiaphrodite.com/ Sayward Rebhal

Not gross! I love that story! We used to pick sourgrass but wild chamomile sounds so much nicer. =)

  • http://bonzaiaphrodite.com/ Sayward Rebhal

Erin, thank you so much for this comment. You don’t even know how much it means to me to read comments like these, so thank you! And congrats on the vegan pregnancy and subsequent vegan monster! =D

Lots of love back to you, from sunny SoCal!

Thanks Shannon! Tea post coming soon . . .

Aww, thank you Judith, this is so sweet. Glad you still like the blog after all these years. And yes — I’ll be posting on tea very soon!

  • Rebecca Carnes

That is amazing!!! OK, we need something like that here in SD stat!

  • Brittany

    Hi Sayward,

Long-time reader/no comment-leaver, here! Today, however, I needed to say something because your post triggered a memory for me. A couple of years ago in Israel, I was introduced to an herbalist who suggested a root to me, the name of which I never remembered — until I saw it on your post! Ashwagandha! Being the fabulous scientist that you are, have you ever heard of Ashwagandha being of benefit to those with Lyme Disease? 6 years and counting of trying to find anything that helps. Any info is always greatly appreciated. Keep on keepin’ on…!
