flying on my feet

Flying.

This was a week of sentimental synchronism. A nostalgic sort of week, indeed.

This was the week that I introduced Waits to Nirvana (he dug it – smart kid), and the week that Jeremy and I stayed up late singing and dancing to all our favorite 90s songs.

Also the week that I reconnected with not one, but TWO separate exes, completely coincidentally, just 3 days apart. And I mean exes from *way* back, men I haven’t seen in nearly a decade, or longer. Wild, guys. WILD.

Nostalgic. Sentimental. This has been a week of looking back over my life, and my goodness there’s been so very much of it, and just sort of marveling over the many, many, many experiences that lie beneath my skin. I have lived a *lot*. I have packed it in.

And I’m doing good, I think.

And looking forward to so much more. My life these days:

hug a cow

We took a trip to The Gentle Barn. Because sometimes you just need to hug a cow, amiright? (This is Faith, and she came to the farm while she was losing her eyesight. Blind Faith, ya know? She’s the sweetest.)

first strawberries
The first strawberries of the season showed up in my CSA box!

ex 1
This is Sam. I loved Sam when I was a teenager, but I consider him my first “adult” relationship. Sam gave me a job after I’d dropped out of high school and run away from home, working in his little record/rave shop. He helped me out a lot when I was in a pretty bad place, and kept me from going further down a dark hole. I hadn’t seen Sam in over a decade, and it was *amazing* to catch up again after so much life had gone by. He’s in LA now, still producing music. Living his dream. And yes, I am 6’1”, which would make him roughly 6’11”. Just in case you were wondering (people usually ask).

music kiddos
And this is Lotus, his daughter. She was born the day before Waits, and how is that for a happy coincidence?! These two got along like peas and carrots.

catching rain drops
Earlier in the week, it rained. So rare in California these days. We tried to drink it right out of the sky.

in a bee hive
And we took a trip to the Natural History Museum, and found our way inside a beehive. So fun!

ex 2
This is Brent. I loved Brent for a long time, but that seems like a lifetime ago. Late teens and into my early 20s. And when we broke up, he moved to New York to follow his dreams. Which is the last place I saw him, 9 (?) years ago. And now, many years later, he’s a staff writer for Gizmodo/Gawker (living the dream) and back in California. All of the pictures we took are of us mugging, making silly faces. Seriously. Couldn’t get a single freakin’ straight one, haha.

acai bowl
This acai bowl was swimming in hemp seeds. Like they should be. ♥

valentinemy valentine

I said yes ♥

my him
This is Jeremy. I adore him. I love him with every little piece of me. He is my present, and my future. And I am so lucky.

Alright now y’all, let’s stop for a moment to think about all the amazing simple, small things that we have to be grateful for. It’s time for the one, the only, Le Love List!

Being able to be friends with my exes. ALL of them. It always surprises me that most folks don’t maintain relationships with the people they’ve loved. I always do. I guess that’s just the way I am, and I’m glad for it. // Celestial Seasonings Country Peach Passion tea. // Cracking Waits up – getting him to laugh so hard he can barely breath. // My dad went to India and brought me back an entire bag of bulk spices, oooooooohmigod. // An evening of dinner and dancing to live music (lots of dancing!), with with my little mister. // Spring. It’s all around me here, blooming my flowers and sprouting fresh buds on dried vines . . . and bolting my dang broccoli! But I love it. Bring on the spring. // My super awesome mama friend has designed a “dry ranch mix”, 100% organic and gluten-free of course. And as one of the official recipe testers (those were FUN parties!), I can say with complete confidence that this is absolutely delicious! Just add vegan mayo + mylk! Available now on Etsy. // Looking back. I like to look back, and I always have. Peering into the past to revisit distant bits of the life I’ve lived – this life I’ve chosen. I guess I’m just a sentimental person, that way. I like to look back.

And forward.

First comment?! Let’s see, loving my kid’s newfound vocabulary, especially the way she reverently whispers ‘bwead’ (bread), Gillian Welch (again, always), owning up to having some ambition, the first stirrings of spring, my new tablecloth – I’m so boring!

What a sweet post to end the week with! Whew. It’s been a long one. A tough one really. Time for a love list indeed:

An advisor who really pushes me where I need to go//a ridiculous cat who stares at me upside down when he’s laying on his back, all 4 paws in the air//surprising and joyful connections made by the blogosphere//being surrounded my stacks of my favorite things–books, notebooks, coffee, folders, records//eating all the (vegan, gluten free) foods all of the time and enjoying true abundance.

I swear it was the ‘super’ new moon on Wednesday – I ran into a heap of people from my past; overwhelmingly good! The last two day have felt lovingly haunted and expansive :) I’m friends with my exes, how can I not continue to love them? I could totally hug a Holstein cow! I’ll go hug my old pooch instead. Niel young, nag champa, friends out of the wood works, feeling good about the crazy, giving my Dad a book he couldn’t put down, sprouting iris bulbs, eagles everywhere xo

I’m friendly with most of my exs. There were a few times It hasn’t worled with people because we were just too much alike and I think and would have been better if we had just been/stayed friends. This week has been crazy for me…and nostalgic in a way as well. My brother called me and finally said he was ready to get help for his substance abuse. So I’ve been dealing with the crazy web that is the mental health system with no insurance. We’ve been going over good and bad times from when we were kids. Old inside jokes and funny stories as well as the sad times. I’m trying to not get my hopes up too too high but it really seems like he’s ready. Like he’s just had enough. He’s been bad off for the last 10 years so im cautiously optimistic.

I know I’m a little late but I just wanted to say good luck with your situation with your brother, Sue. I really hope it all works out. ♥
