This is how I spent last Sunday: creating artisan vegan cocktails for an upcoming summer feature here on Bonzai. The life of a blogger is tough, no?

Hello hello, and haaaaaappy Friday! I don’t know about you, but I’m just tickled that it’s finally the weekend. This week seemed to drag and the June gloom has settled into Santa Barbara, making every morning overcast and I’m having Portland winter PTSD and I’ve been burning my candle at both ends and I’m ready for some R&R, and also longest run-on sentence ever ohmigod.

I was talking to my mother-in-law on the phone last Friday – as I was driving down to LA – and she was like “Aren’t you getting over being sick? Are you burning your candle at both ends?” and I was like “Aw Mama come on, you know me! I burn the candle at both ends, the top, the bottom, up, down, and from all sides!”

Work hard work hard work hard and then play hard, that’s just how I’ve always been. She laughed – “I know sweetie, one of the things I love about you is your zest for life. Just make sure you get some rest, okay?”

Okay Mama, I’ll try . . .

. . . some day.

~~~
My candle burns at both ends;
It will not last the night;
But ah, my foes, and oh, my friends –
It gives a lovely light!
    Yay Productivity! Sayward, I really love these Weekend Send-Offs, they always put me in the right frame of mind for the weekend!
    Love List!
    1. Learning that I am still capable of Self-Discipline. I got into a terrible rut where I was hitting snooze a zillion times every morning and oversleeping for no real reason other than I was trying to avoid my dayjob, which I really, really, dislike. Last week I made a rule for myself that I was no longer allowed to hit the snooze button. I’m happy to say that I’ve been getting at up at 6am for 8 straight days and have not hit the snooze button once! I haven’t even been tempted! And I actually feel more refreshed and alert than I did whne I was hitting snooze and *stealing* sleep. Go Me!
    2. A graduaton Party for my Cousin, and BBQ with friends, and a dinner for Father’s Day are all on deck for this weekend :)
    3. As related to the above dislike fo my dayjob, I found a posting online for an Adjunct Theatre Professor at a college about two hours from where I currently live. Teaching Theatre at the University Level is a big goal fo mine, and I’m going to apply. Even if I have to commute for awhile (that is, if I get it). I’m still going to apply. I’m tired of hating my job. I’m going to do this!
    Happy Weekend!
    <3
    Cheers to a long love list! Looking forward to the drinks post, those look amazing; I want to make some for my hubby. I loved reading about your time at VVC (and omg all the food!). Re: your involvment on the panels and moderating, that your nerves gave way to excitement and you began to enjoy the experience was especially inspiring : )
    Love list:
    + spending Fathers’ Day weekend with family
    + our garden is thriving
    + being asked advice by people I hold in high regard
    + getting to talk with one of my biggest influences on me going vegan
    + my husband’s cooking
    + Regular Show
    + upcoming trip to our friends’ sanctuary to meet their rescued mini cow
    + this very Bonzai Aphrodite blog and writing Love lists!
  • lysette
    It’s over cast and raining here but I love it for the sake of the tree’s I just planted ;)
    Loving the Love List xox
    ~Last day on my carpentry job till September.
    ~ A week off before my summer job as a stage manager for an outdoor theatre company.
    ~The whole body ache after a day of hard physical labor, followed by the best sleep ever!
    ~Finding reserves of energy when I thought I was depleted
    ~My sister asking me to make veganized Australian pies for our Mother’s 70th birthday party. I kick ass at pastry so I know I’ll win over the party with vegan pies.
    ~A pile of used vegan cook books were traded in at my family’s book shop and my parents put them aside so I could do a pick through before they went into stock. Vegan Brunch! The Everyday Vegan! Vegan YumYum! and Fresh at Home-which I’m gifting to a friend.
    I’d keep going but I’ll be late for work! Been a week of wonders xox
  • lysette
    I love the Regular show!!
  • Sarah C.
    First: yay cocktails! Given that we’ve established our similar tastes in cocktails, I know I’m going to love those creations. Second: yay ESVM! I totally love her. I know you’re a busy gal, but if you ever need a good book to read I completely loved the biography of her called Savage Beauty. She was just the most fascinating person and really one of the most important literary figures of her age, yet so few people remember her today!
  • KK PhD
    Give my congrats to G!
    I’m glad you’re doing a series on summer cocktails because I have a LOT OF BOOZE I can donate to you before I move. Srsly, come take some.
  • LPM
    Those cocktails look Ah-Mazing!
    *My loves, I won a prize pack from Vegan Bodybuilding. Cannot wait for that to arrive. I believe it affirms my choice to transition. ~whispers~ I’m not even vegetarian, but have been researching veganism, especially for bodybuilding.
    *I think I figured out a new compost situation that may deter my pups from digging deep, nom-nom-ing and dragging it all across the yard.
    *My bestest friend, who also happens to be my hubs.
    *Cheesy horror movies and books for the weekend!
    *Cuddles with my fur critters.
    *Fresh cherries
    XOXO
    <3 my always amazing boyfriend getting some love this week when he sat in for a pretty awesome, semi-famous guitarist
    <3 my sweet Ria, the German Shepherd we adopted just over two months ago, making sure she protects me by laying between the couch and the door when it's just the two of us here
    <3 the positive vibes I've gotten from interviews this week. Even if I don't get this job, I know I made a good impression on 3 different schools, and that gives me hope.
    <3 the back-up plans I've come up with in case I don't get a teaching position. They're both pretty crazy and unrealistic, but that's never stopped me before.
  • MathTutor
    You know what would be AWESOME? A dosarita margarita inspired vegan drink…just saying. Alas, on to my love list!
    1. I am heading to San Fran for a mini vaca and see family I’ve never met before!
    2. Dolma’s
    3. Conversations with my friend Liz…she’s a hoot
    4. I start my big girl job in a week!
    Have a lovely weekend Sayward!
  • wendy
    Love that poem, always one of my favorites! The cocktails look great. Right now, I’m loving LIFE. Just came home from getting my gallbladder out, and relieved that I woke up. I’ve got serious issues dealing with the whole “finality of death” thing, so being wheeled down a hospital corridor to an OR is probably the worst sensation ever for me. Going to spend some QT with my pillow tonight, then I foresee a weekend of long strolls to nowhere to appreciate our beautiful world!
    s’cuze the ignorance…what makes cocktail vegan? aren’t most cocktails (except things like white russians) vegan already?
  • http://bonzaiaphrodite.com/ Sayward Rebhal
    Lots of liquors are not vegan (beer and wine too) because of ingredients they use in the fining/clarifying process. There’s an awesome website called Barnivore that tracks which beers, wines, and spirits are or are not vegan – http://www.barnivore.com/
    Wow Wendy, congrats on a successful surgery and here’s to a speedy recovery! Carpe Diem!
    Great list, and I’m sending my good vibes for your job!
  • Christy Milford
    What a beautiful tray of artisan cocktails! I agree with another commenter, this is such a positive weekend send-off.
    Hmmm, my love list:
    *attending the Pride Parade in a nearby small city, my first pride in four years and SO missed.
    *kissing my husband after being away from each other for several days
    *i keep thinking of all these moments from my recent San Francisco vacation- just being near the ocean, smelling the eucalyptus and lavender growing everywhere, spending time with friends, and remembering what joy feels like
    *simple homemade meals like brown rice and black beans with goat cheese, fresh cilantro, and cumin mixed in
    Have a super fantastic weekend!
    I was reading your love list and was thinking “Yay no snooze button, but girl! You gotta get out of a job you hate!” And then I got to number 3 and HOORAY! Do it lady, move on up! <3
  • http://bonzaiaphrodite.com/ Sayward Rebhal
    Thanks Crystal, I’m glad you enjoyed and I’m so glad my story was inspiring. I always feel shy sharing stuff like that but I’m so happy to hear that people appreciate it. =)
    Wow, GREAT Love List! Yay!
    Oh man, I haven’t been to a Pride festival in ages, you’ve inspired me to try to go to one this year!
    Hope you had a great weekend too!
    VACATION!! Three weeks of camping, hiking, and wearing Nina OUT. I spent the weekend taste testing new ideas for camping grub and then accidentally made a white bean coconut pecan cake that was outstanding! I may not be commenting for a few weeks, but I’ll still be checking in while editing photos during our trip. Also, Yay for finding balance while burning the candle at both ends! That’s the way I roll, too.
