Do You Know How Hard I Tried To Come Up With A Pun Using The Word “FAQ” As The Eff Word, But In A Way That Wasn’t At All Offensive? Really Hard!

April 16th, 2013 - filed under: Furthermore » Feedback

Thank you so much to everyone who participated in my poll last week, both by voting and by leaving your amazing comments and suggestions. There were over 1,000 votes (!!!), and that was so helpful. I learned a lot, and mostly – and most delightfully – it really reinforced that I am on the right track and should continue to trust my instincts. So, yay! THANK YOU!

So in that same vein, I have one more favor to ask. Damian and I are actually in the midst of a huge site redesign, and one of the new features will be a static FAQ page. I get a lot of emails, and I often end up answering the same questions over and over again. And I know that emails only represent a fraction of the people who are curious, so I think it will be great to have some of the more interesting and popular queries all compiled in one place.

What I need from you is . . . questions!

What questions would you like to see answered? They can be personal or not at all personal, anything from “Why do you wear your hair in those weird dog-ear buns?” to “I went vegan a month ago and now I feel like I’m always starving – what’s up?”

I’d loooove to hear from you, so please please, ask away! You can leave your questions in the comments, or you can email me at info AT bonzaiaphrodite DOT com, whichever you prefer. And if you see that somebody’s already asked your question, don’t forget to hit the little “upvote” (this symbol: ^) under their comment to let me know it’s an extra popular question.

Thanks so much guys!

Kidney health on a vegan diet: What’s a vegan to do when oxalate containing foods are just so delicious??

  • http://www.facebook.com/kelly.muschiana Kelly Waivio Muschiana

I have something to add to this…recently a Chiropractor told me that the vegan diet was not all it’s cracked up to be (yeah…what ev Doc!) and one of the reasons he mentioned was kidney health. He stated that “vegans are highest on the list for kidney disease”. I have NEVER heard this and I’ve done a lot of research on this lifestyle for the last 2 1/2 years. So that was news to me… I’m wondering if it may have been a scare tactic though.

    Where do you get protein?

    Where do you get iron?

    Where do you get calcium?

    The answer to all? PUDLA!

No but seriously…I hear those questions all the time.

What is your skincare/haircare routine? What are the best vegan beauty products? (coconut oil…tea tree oil…)

  • Leslie

I sometimes get in a “food rut” with my (vegan) and raw food dishes. Your food posts always inspire me…..Can you suggest any ways to spice up the variety of my meals?
I have a few vegan cookbooks but they are pretty much mimic the food I already make or contain too many fake meat fake anything recipes. I like to keep it real!!!!
I am loving having you back, I just have not got around to saying anything yet.
I am going to be in SB this week-end for a wedding, will you around??

I was quoting Sayward’s suggestive questions above as I hear

I’ll let you have my share of fried potatoes ;) not my dish!

  • Deedee

Where do you get Omega-3, Omega-6 and all the “variations” thereof on a vegan diet. Ppl tell me that the kind I get from flax seeds is not the same “variation” as in fish ** confused **

  • Deedee

And B12… can you absorb it from plant based sources or do you have to take a supplement?

  • Andrea B

Please let us know! I had some weird back pain that my NP thought might be kidney infection, and when she found out I was vegan, she got a “well, that explains it” look. (Busy looking for new doc…)

  • Andrea B

Turns out was not kidney infection – just back pain in a weird place.

  • Becky

Your thoughts on fats! Favorite fashion blogs? What supplements do you take these days? Maybe an article on cooking simply/cheaply vegan for one!

  • bohemianmatka

A chiropractor is not a healthcare practitioner (MD/DO, NP, or PA) or registered dietician, so they should not be doling out advice on dietary intake. That’s just bad practice. Please don’t take this statement as a put-down on chiropractors, I do think they contribute to the healthcare community, but they often over-step their scope of practice. Vegan/Vegetarian diets are often recommended to patients with low kidney function, renal disease, or diabetes, due to the low(er) protein intake. Vegan/Vegetarian diets DO NOT cause kidney disease. Patients with these types of diseases though have to pay particular attention to their protein intake to insure they are still receiving enough protein throughout the day that their body needs to function, but not so much it overloads the renal system.

I sort of feel like a dirty cheater because I’m not a vegan – but I’m working on it. Any newbie stuff would be great! How/when you decided to make the switch, what your go to foods were, how you explained it to everyone (and not punched them when they made faces at you), even how you talk to Waits about it.

There are so many vegans to aspire to be like because it’s just natural for you guys, but starting out seems like a big change. Doesn’t help that I live in an rural area in Michigan….

Thanks for being awesome, I’m loving following along!

  • Katrina Fleming

My friend (vegan) has always gotten kidney stones. His doc (not vegan) said his vegan diet has nothing to do with it. In fact, he said that dairy can cause more kidney stones, but that it can take years to get the effects of dairy out of one’s system. He said as the years pass, my friend should probably be seeing the problem disappear. That’s just one doctor’s opinion, but interesting nonetheless.

Um, this is a meta question (a question about asking questions): how comfortable are you with discussing your personal life on here? As an over-sharing blogger, I’m just curious. :)

  • Alina

great questions so far! I ^’d a few. I think some answers relating to your personal life would be nice for newbies coming to your blog if you’re ok sharing….how old are you? where are you from? do you have any tattoos? what’s your parenting style…. also consider sharing your story in the FAQs in so far as transitioning to healthy lifestyle, for example letting people know its ok to be a non-vegan eater here! aka, have you always been vegan? what’s the first step I should take towards feeling better? my family isn’t healthy, what should i do? (i hear it all the time… “my husband isn’t satisfied with just a salad, he’s a meat and potatoes man, we could never transition to eating healthy/vegetarian/vegan/etc”) my marketing mind is rambling, hope this helps!

  • Leslie

Another question as I am making tofu scramble while I type….What is your take on soy products, especially tofu. I try to limit my intake but it is such a great addition to so many vegan meals. I buy sprouted tofu if that makes any difference!

  • http://bonzaiaphrodite.com/ Sayward Rebhal

Yes! Leslie come to Earth Day on Sunday!!! We’ll be there all day long. =)

Vegan condoms available at FoodFight! – http://www.foodfightgrocery.com/glyde-condoms-4-strip/

Also, the copper IUD is my non-condom BC of choice. It’s non-hormonal and lasts 10 years! A++ However, I cannot guarantee that it is vegan or was never tested on animals.

I wish! The best thing I can think of is by going to the very first post, and just clicking “next post” at the bottom of each post. This was my first real post: http://bonzaiaphrodite.com/2009/01/interpreting-a-label-part-i-speaking-the-language/ (aww, memorieeeees!)

Ooh just email me! info AT bonzaiaphrodite DOT com.

The new website will include a whole page on coaching, but for now anyone can feel free to shoot me an email!

Hey Deedee, to at least partly answer your question i wrote about omegas here – http://bonzaiaphrodite.com/2010/01/vegn-nutrition-essential-fatty-acids-and-the-importance-of-dha/

    Hope that helps!

  • http://bonzaiaphrodite.com/ Sayward Rebhal

You have to take a supplement or eat fortified foods (nutritional yeast, plant milks, etc). There are no vegan foods that provide a reliable source of natural B12.

  • http://bonzaiaphrodite.com/ Sayward Rebhal

Don’t feel like a dirty cheater! Go easy on yourself – you are awesome for caring and for trying at all. =)

  • http://bonzaiaphrodite.com/ Sayward Rebhal

Funny you should ask, but next month at Vida Vegan Con I’ll be moderating the panel on privacy lines and over-sharing. I’m planning to write a summary/recap after that!

  • bohemianmatka

I was planning to get a copper IUD once baby Jackson debuts in July; I’m glad to hear that your having good luck with it, because I don’t personally know a soul who has one locally. (but at the same time, my favorite convo topic is not “so, what birth control do you use?”).

I asked my friend Ginny Messina, RD (http://www.theveganrd.com/) about this, and this is what she had to say. Hope it helps!

“Hi Sayward. I assume they are asking about kidney stones? I don’t know of any evidence that vegans are at higher risk for kidney stones. And, although people who are at risk for kidney stones should avoid or limit very high-oxalate foods, they can still eat certain low-oxalate beans like garbanzo beans, lentils and black eyed peas. Take a look at this list: http://www.ohf.org/docs/Oxalate2008.pdf

I think a bigger concern might be that some vegans have diets that are too low in calcium, so emphasizing calcium-rich foods at meals can help.

Hope that helps. Looking forward to seeing you next month!”
