If I were to write a love ballad, it would be all about baking soda. It might go something like,

White as snow/ and powdered fine/ clean anything/ to make you mine

I didn’t know/ we’d never start / ’cause vinegar/ has got your heart

But seriously, this stuff is out of control. Baking soda and vinegar are the foundation of DIY cleaning. Don’t be fooled – it really is that simple.

And this recipe is easy enough, but I swear it works like a charm. You don’t need complex, carcinogenic compounds lurking around your cabinets! Baking soda, baby, and a liberal splash of vinegar.

Drain De-Clogger Recipe:

1/2 cup baking soda

1 cup vinegar

1 gallon boiling water

Carefully siphon all the baking soda down the drain. Pour in 1/2 of the vinegar, covering the hole so the fizz is forced down, not up (omit this for toilets, please!). Add the second half of the vinegar, following the same procedure. Allow to sit for 15 minutes or so, and then flush with an entire gallon of boiling water.

I have used this method in my shower and my toilet, and it has never failed me. For particularly troublesome stoppage, you may have to administer multiple applications. For instance, I recently had to go three rounds with my janky bathtub drain. It was a mighty battle, but my baking soda came through for me!

Enjoy, and happy green cleaning!

This worked the first time I used it. I loved it!!!!

I didn’t have vinegar, but I did have apple cinder vinegar and it worked just the same! I put the baking soda in shoved it down my bathroom sink drain, poured the apple cider vinegar and pulled up the plug. I did this twice and then poured boiling water down. It still was clogged and then I used the plunger and poof! It was unclogged! Thanks for the tip! And just in case you don’t have vinegar and some how have apple cider vinegar it works just as good! :)

  • Joannalutt2

I love around-the-house, simple ways to be greener (and cleaner). Not only are they healthier for all, but you can save a lot of money too! Since I can’t go greener by building an eco-friendly house or buying an expensive electric car I love simple tips like this. Some advice to everybody – do this as soon as drains start to get slow, or even periodically if they clog frequently. It is effective, but not as effective as the harsh stuff when drains have been neglected for a long time.

I want to say…I absolutely adore YOU!! I lov your homemade clog cleaner!!! I had been dealing with a very stubborn clogged toilet and tub. I had tried that stupid cleaners…you know..the bad ones. But they didnt work! My days started and ended with me bailing water. My son suggested I tpry to google the problem. I did!!!! And came up with your website. I tried it and was truely ama zed. It really works I am so happy!!! I am telling everyone I know!!!! Thank h you so much. GOD BLESS YOU!!!

  • Deborah Monson

Totally worked!!! I used a plunger at the end which sealed the deal, but it’s free flowing now! Hallelujah :)

  • wally

will it work in a toilet drain??

  • Jenna

In a desperate attempt to unclog my bathroom sink without having to run to the store, I found this great remedy! I had my doubts that it would work since my drain seemed pretty terrible, but WOW!!! Totally worked, and now the water runs down with ease! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

  • Rzzttktlyn

How do you siphon the baking soda down the toilet? Im so confused.

Fantastic post! Thanks, very much appreciate. Worked like a charm without using any harmful toxins. :))

  • Jalapeno Dragoon

Worked great on my bathroom sink. It takes a little while after the water is added to work itself out, but it works. I’m so happy i found this. My husband can grow a full beard in a day, and just grooming it clogs my sink to a stand still once a week. I taped off the backup drainage holes before starting, and i think it helped. Either way, my sink is now draining better than ever!

That’s AWESOME! Thank you so much!

** a preventative method, also// NOT putting grease or any grains down the drain, esp rice and such…and using a 1.00 hair catcher on the drain when showering….using hot water when washing your hands, or using a bit of baking soda when washing hands (if you have a grease monkey hubby like i do…) I also scrub the sink with baking soda once a month with really hot water…

  • Nifurmommy

using baking soda and some ice in a disposal does wonders….then when the ice is chewed up or dissolved, vinegar and hot water from the sink basin…put the ice with the baking soda down the drain, plug. fill sink up with hot water and vinegar, and unplug so that it floods down while you run the disposal…can also make maybe vinegar ice cubes and stick those down with the baking soda ? thought just occurred to me as i was typing…would save vinegar i would think…then the hot water? hm

*shurg* I tried i, it didn’t work, used Drano immediately and had no problems….

  • Ecoeros

I think the idea is to ‘funnel’ the baking soda down the drain….. do whatever it takes to get it into the drainpipe closest to the actual clog. That way, when you add the vinegar, you’ll have a moment to grab the stopper and keep the fizzing action where it needs to be. That’s my 2c. Good luck!

  • Jenny

I was a bit skeptical about this formula, but it worked like a charm! I will never go back to draino! I would rather not use or smell harsh chemicals. Thank you for sharing this recipe!

  • Donna

It worked for me thank goodness- glad I read the other comments too about not using draino anymore- thank you

  • Mike

Just throwing it out there: I just did this on my bathroom sink and it worked out perfectly. However, I would suggest using about half of the suggested amount. I ended up having to scrape out about half of the baking soda to get it all down the drain then I added the other half slowly afterwards for good measure.

  • wadding in water

Does it work on main drains?

  • http://bonzaiaphrodite.com/ Sayward Rebhal

    I would think so!

  • cm richards

Thanks for the tip. It worked!! I tried Drano first and nothing happened. I even used old baking soda I had stuck in the back of the fridge and the minute it went in the drain it bubbled up a huge wad of hair.

  • Pie in the Sky

I just used some boiling water and a plunger and it cleared the clog but I will add the baking soda and vinegar now for good measure. Thanks!

  • Diana

I have used this method in my sinks with great success, but how do I use it in my toilet?

  • Sey

    Like a beer bong?

  • Amy

I would have to agree with Cam and John. I was going to look for the end of the thread from Lisa’s comment to say that Baking Soda and Vinegar are both chemicals the instant that I read the word “chemicals” in her OP. I guess I must not be on the planet or NatMc is speaking of some planet other than Earth. I did not and infact do not know that there was an implied distinction, as chemicals sounded like a generalization.

  • Mapa

This worked wonderfully!!!! I’m definitely sharing this with family members!!! :-)

  • SteveofAZ

I had tried many HEAVY DUTY drain cleaners without much success. I just happened to across this article and decided to give it a try. IT REALLY SUCKED….which was a GOOD THING!!! For the first time, in recent memory, the sink drained with a swirling vortex and “sucking” sound! I, once again, have a happy drain!

  • http://www.facebook.com/cindy.barden.10 Cindy Barden

Very well said and very much agreed

I believe you are all puttng way to much thought into a little coment .
It looks to me like your putting her down for her choice of words .
So really the ones who are being mean are the ones who really look bad.

  • Rob

lol that is a very good point.

  • Rick T.

Just used this tip to unclog a kitchen sink, thanks so much for the tips!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/nina.l.ann Nina Lea Ann

can you do this to clean a garbage disposal too ya think?

  • http://bonzaiaphrodite.com/ Sayward Rebhal

    I would!

  • Mary

I was a skeptic but I was bored and I tried it and…….it totally worked!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you and it was free b/c I already had the ingredients. I think the reason it may have worked for me is I drained some meat over the sink and the grease got to it and clogged it up like the meat did my arteries. Will not forget thanks!

  • Annie

Any advice for an already full- to -the -top toilet?

  • http://bonzaiaphrodite.com/ Sayward Rebhal

Haven’t dealt with that, sorry! I might just try to siphon the water out and then baking soda bomb it once it’s almost empty. Good luck!

Wow! It worked pretty slick for my kitchen sink, just overfilled with stuff, I wasn’t sure it would do the trick. Thanks!

  • Anonymous

Hey, so if my bathtub is FULL, like now as of last night, NOTHING is going down, not with the plunger or anything.

do I just put all of this in there and hope for the best???? Should I use a bottle and take the standing water out??? Because I’m not sure the baking soda will ever see the drain with how much water is just sitting there, nevertheless the vinegar.

  • http://bonzaiaphrodite.com/ Sayward Rebhal

This wouldn’t work in standing water, though if you read through the comments I know people have used it to deal with similar situations. I think you’ll have to remove most of the water though.

  • Heather

Holy crap awesome! I rent a house and am completely banned from putting noxious chemicals down the drain (understandably so, as plumbers aren’t big fans of getting a face-full of Drano when a problem is misdiagnosed as a clogged drain). Anyway, I did this au natural treatment and at first I thought I had just clogged my drain with baking soda. But then I poured the boiling water in and BAM. The drain itself is also awesomely clean too! Yay for hands-free cleaning!

  • DaisyMae

Just so you know before you use “Drano” (it takes the slick coating off the inside of your PVC pipes actually making stuff stick to the sides worse and it destroys your septic systems good bacteria that biodegrades everything. so try this a few times, or a snake before you try Drano. If its too late you may have to get something like “Rid” to get bacteria back up not sure if that will actually help may have to ask a septic guy.

  • Chris

Works for me – shower drain. Took patience – give the baking soda/vinegar time before pouring in boining water. 2 tries but then it was clear!

  • Sarah

So I tried this and it worked great to unclog my drain, but it completely ruined and cracked the enamel in the sink…. and I have no idea how to fix that without completely replacing the sink. Any thoughts? (and also as a warning before someone else tries this)

  • http://bonzaiaphrodite.com/ Sayward Rebhal

Wow I have never heard of that happening! Eek, don’t know what to tell you, sorry.
