A good friend of mine sings a sweet, alt-country cover of the über-80′s Wall Of Voodoo jam, Lost Weekend (a spectacular song in it’s own right). It’s super catchy, which is why I’ve used a lyric to title this series – even though the original song is rather forlorn. Quite the opposite of my weekends these days, but never mind that. It’s a great title and really, aren’t they all? Lost, but never forgotten.

This May, SoCal saw not one, but TWO all-vegan, all-awesome festivals in a single spectacular weekend of cruelty-free and eco-friendly celebratory glory! And I think it’s official: LA is giving Portland, New York, and SF a run for their “Best Vegan City” money. Bring it.

And if this weekend wasn’t wonderful enough all on it’s own, for me it was EXTRA special because, well, LA Vegan Beer Fest is where I met Jeremy for the first time, last year. ♥ ♥ ♥

And now, one whole wild year later, this is how we spent our anniversary weekend:

Saturday morning meant a road trip to LA. We always make a giant fresh-pressed juice before a weekend away, to clean out the crisper and use up all the veggies. This one, pre-beer fest, centered around beets. Because liver.

A gorgeous drive down the California coast, a quick pit stop for a couple iced coffees to fuel the fun, and we were ready to take on the 5th annual LA Vegan Beer & Food Festival!

Gosh, how to even describe Vegan Beer Fest?

It’s like, one day of pure unabashed and unadulterated awesome. Vegans – the happiest vegans! – everywhere, all around. So many friendly and familiar (and even famous) faces. Good music – live and turned up loud. PERFECT WEATHER. Incredible food, soooo much food, from raw kale salad, to gourmet Mexican, to mac ‘n cheese + ribz turned into a grilled cheese sandwich. And of course, beer. All the beer.

I think my friend Brian, AKA The Sexy Vegan, said it best on his Instagram:

I can’t say enough about the Los Angeles Vegan Beer Fest. It is seriously the best day of the year (if it’s a year in which I didn’t get married or have a kid).

And I might just have to agree!

With Brian, Mr Sexy Vegan himself, and his wife Desiree, who I finally got to meet – and who is rad!

Beer-battered avocado tacos.

Taco??

TACO!

Beer Fest is, of course, about beer. And great food, and really great music. But most of all it’s about community. I ran into SO MANY long-lost vegan pals, and I got to meet Bonzai readers which is always so special, and I made new friends, too. Lots of new friends!

And that’s one of my favorite things about the vegan community in general – the accessibility and the inclusiveness. For the most part we are all just so incredibly stoked to be involved in something so meaningful. And there’s very little social hierarchy that I experience, so that you can go to an event like this, and hey! that person is totally on TV but they’re just chumming it up with everyone else. And ohmigosh! That’s so-and-so from my favorite podcast, or whatsherface from that seminar I saw, or that wicked sharp writer who just released a top-selling book. Or, maybe it’s someone you don’t recognize at all – someone who just looks super freakin’ cool. And you can just walk up and say hi, no matter who they are, because they’re probably approachable, and they probably just want to geek out over the food, and chat about activism.

I love that about our community.

Beer for the People!

This is Ayinde Howell, one of my very favorite vegans. Besides being a kickass chef/restauranteur and soon-to-be cook book author (check out his blog, I Eat Grass), Ayinde has been vegan for his entire life. That’s right! So for a mom like me who’s raising a wee little pint-sized plant-eater of my own, Ayinde is a rare unicorn. I’m actually thinking of interviewing him on his experience living vegan-since-birth . . . would you guys be interested in that?

And finally, of course, this whole thing was also an anniversary!

We found the very exact spot where we met, one year prior. Because we’re big dorks.

One year. One year earlier, I’d spent the entire trip down to LA telling my girlfriend Kate about how I just didn’t believe in longterm romance. And how I really didn’t think that my “match” existed, because that person would have to be X but also Y, and strangely Z, and also this impossibly long collection of other odd, often seemingly contradictory letters and variables.

I had no idea that I was describing the man I’d meet only hours later, who turned out to be all those things and so much more. Jeremy and I bumped into each other around 3:30, at that very spot at Beer Fest, and we were stuck like glue until after midnight. And we’ve continued to stick, ever since. He is everything I never thought existed, and who could have imagined that one year later we would be here, living this beautiful life together?

♥ ♥ ♥

Beer Fest wraps up early, around 5:30-6. And after saying a million goodbyes, Jeremy and I decided to retrace our steps from our first night together, a year ago. Which meant: dinner at Bulan down on Melrose Ave!

Drunken noodles and garlic pepper tofu with broccoli. Perfect post-Beer Fest food!

Bulan is a hole-in-the-wall all-vegetarian Thai joint, and it’s awesome. And after dinner, we grabbed a night cap at the same bar as last year, just a little bit farther down Melrose.

But of course, this year, instead of escorting Kate and I safely to our hotel, Jeremy took my hand and walked me back to the little room we’d rented, right in the heart of Hollywood. Together.

It was a really, really great day.

~~~
On Sunday we enjoyed a lazy morning lounging around. We knew we wanted to hit World Fest – an annual LA event that bills itself as basically “vegan Earth Day” – but we weren’t necessarily in any rush. So, we decided to take a bit of a stroll, to the Hollywood Farmer’s Market.
Holy moly, I had no idea the Hollywood FarMar was so amazing! There was tons of produce, but also prepared foods (for like, blocks!) and clothing and wares, and flowers, and coffee and juice, and music . . . it was more like a bazaar than a FarMar. It was great! And while we were there, we finally got to sample Nary Dairy vegan cheese (good but very similar to the cashew cheeses I make at home) and No Moo “wise cream” (which was delish!). We also grabbed breakfast:
Fresh cracked young Thai coconut water at the Hollywood Farmer’s Market. // Young Thai coconut flesh for breakfast on the way to World Fest.
So, we didn’t actually take a ton of pictures at World Fest, whoopsie! Well actually that’s not entirely true, we did take pics but they’re mostly of us holding food, not of the actual surroundings, and I’m sure you’re pretty tired of looking at my mug by now. Just a few to get an idea of the event?
Lunch:
For me: gluten-free falafel with fresh herbs, salad, and tahini sauce. This was great. // For Jeremy, a California-style hot dog with avocado, arugula, and tomato with crispy-fried onions.
This was the first World Fest I’d been to, and word on the street is attendance was low due to the double-booked weekend with Beer Fest the day before. But World Fest is a totally different vibe, focused on the environment, on education, on family-friendly activities and lots of brands and booths selling goods and sharing information. There were multiple stages and lots of live music, plus guest speakers and demos.
V-Dog vegan dog food was on super sale, so we had to take advantage. // What’s that you say? Free mocha almond fudge ice cream bars at the So Delicious booth? Well don’t mind if I do!
Overall, World Fest was a really cool mix of art, fashion, health, and activism. I hope that next year it’s staggered more from Beer Fest (though it did make for a fun and eventful weekend!) and I’ll definitely bring along the wee Waits Rebhal next time.
The long walk back to the car.
Jeremy and I took off in the early afternoon, giant bag of V-Dog + refreshing snow cone in tow. We were home by late afternoon, and spent a balmy and relaxing evening playing cards outside while grilling up veggies and buffalo tempeh wingz.
Again, gosh, a really, really great day.
But I seem to have had a lot of those, this past year …
I remember when I was in college, in my early twenties, in the early oughts, and my roommate asked me one morning, “Do you know what a meme is?” And I . . . had no idea what she was talking about! And isn’t that crazy? Oh, how times have changed.
So there’s this meme that’s popular in the lifestyle blogging world, and I’ve always wanted to try it. As a compulsive documentarian, I’ve attempted to record my life in many iterations of photo-essay, from the small (ie, What I Ate Wednesdays) to the grand (like a good ol’ 365 project) and pretty much everything in between. And this meme – A Photo An Hour – seems like a logical next step.
I can’t decide if I’ll do it again (you tell me?), but I’m glad I finally tried it. It’s an interesting way to both a) move through your day (What will I be doing in an hour from now? 2 hours? What will it look like?) as well as b) reflect back on your day (Wow, I sure did a lot of *that*. Or maybe – I didn’t do much of anything. Or maybe – this doesn’t show what I really did!)
This is what my day looked like this past Saturday, broken down by hourly intervals. Waits was with Damian all day.
8:00 am
Bunny hair and sleepy eyes. Sigh, I guess it’s time to get up and start this day.
8:30 am
Starting the day, take 2. A wiggly wake-up call. Okay okay FINE! Now we’re getting up.
9:30 am
Breakfast for two. Pudla with sautéed onion and zucchini, plus kalamata olives, topped with a sprinkle of vegan cheese and some heirloom tomato. Served with salsa and of course, a steaming vat of black tea + stevia + almond milk.
10:30 am
A canine date on the floor with this guy, and this book. My life has recently veered sharply off its expected course, onto a different road entirely, actually. Sometimes change is slow-growth, like a giant Sequoia redwood tree. But other times, it picks you up, spins you around, and launches you towards your future like a gosh darn shot-put.
I’m currently experiencing the latter.
A non-canine date with my beau, a study break down at the Farmer’s market. Wandering hand-in-hand, taking in all the inspiration (and plotting our dinner).
12:30 pm
Back home. More of this.
1:30 pm
Another pause in the studying. Will break for plant blood. I made us juice with beets + their greens, cucumber, parsley, ginger, and apples. A pint apiece.
2:30 pm
More of the same.
The problem with shot-put style change is that it doesn’t leave much time for planning. I had all of 9 days – count them NINE LITTLE DAYS – to completely prepare for the GRE. I think this is what they call “cramming”.
3:30 pm
A snack. Still studying, but simultaneously snacking on chips with black beans, guac, and salsa.
4:30 pm
We ran some errands on our bikes. A trip to the hardware store, plus picking up a few things for dinner. Afternoon bike rides are pretty fantastic.
5:30 pm
OH PLEASE MAKE IT STOP.
6:30 pm
Done! I come into the kitchen; he’s already prepping dinner. These shiitakes are ready for roasting.
One of our very, verymost favorite things to do together is cook. Long, slow, lazy meals made without recipes, with our own imaginations, created and recreated along the way. This intimate culinary collaboration has truly become one of my happiest places on earth.
7:30 pm
Roasted cauliflower coming out, homemade mushroom lentil loaf going in . . .
8:30 pm
Dinner outside. Mushroom lentil loaf with barbecue sauce and vegan Jack, Farmer’s Market asparagus, and mashed FarMar cauliflower with roasted garlic and truffle salt. Do I even need to mention that this meal was absolutely divine? Well for the record, it was.
9:30 pm
Burning sage. Because we were sort of performing a little ceremony. Oh god, yes you can totally tease us for being such ridiculous hippies.
The rest of the night was basically boring, sort of puttering-cleaning-mundane sort of stuff, and I mostly let the camera rest. There was a good session of this before bed though:
And I totally won!
♥
PS – I took these photos on Saturday but I’m posting them on Wednesday, and I’m taking the GRE on Thursday which means . . . please with me luck!
A good friend of mine sings a sweet, alt-country cover of the über-80′s Wall Of Voodoo jam, Lost Weekend (a spectacular song in it’s own right). It’s super catchy, which is why I’m using a lyric to title this series – even though the original song is rather forlorn. Quite the opposite of my weekends these days, but never mind that. It’s a great title and really, aren’t they all? Lost, but never forgotten.
Birthday boy.
This weekend was spectacular! Overflowing with fun and I just had to share it, although I must warn you, there were long periods of time where I was having so much fun that I completely forgot to take pictures. Oh well, I always say that if capturing the moment interferes with living the moment, well that’s just not worth it. I hope you can forgive me! As it is, this is going to be a ridiculously picture-heavy post.
So alright, here we go!
Friday
On Friday afternoon, Waits woke up from his nap pretty late, which meant we were in a bit of a hurry. So I fixed him some strawberries sprinkled with hemp seeds (one of his very favorite treats) and got us all dressed and packed and gathered and ready to go.
We had a very important birthday party to attend, you see. Amber is one of my dearest friends – we did our research together back in college – and her baby boy was turning one. Amber lives in LA, which doesn’t seem so far, but with busy lives it’s just long enough to mean we rarely get the chance to get together. Boo!
Damian, Waits, and the little birthday boy.
Beautiful Amber.
After dinner Waits and Damian left, and I was on my own for the next 36 hours. Soon enough the birthday wound down, and once the wee birthday boy was tucked in to bed, Amber and I stole away to one of my favorite bars to catch this awesome jazz trio I love. Of course, we spent pretty much the whole time curled up on a couch in the back corner of the patio, yakking away, not really hearing the jazz at all.
I didn’t take a single picture. Bad blogger!
Saturday
I was so excited for Saturday! I’d been excited for months, in fact, and the day had finally arrived. May 4th – the LA Vegan Beer & Food Festival!
Breakfast. Of. Champions.
I started the day off right, with a nice big high-protein power breakfast. I’ve been experimenting with making my pudla batter a little bit thinner, and then folding it over like a mock omelet. Which is pretty epic. This one had fresh spinach and sun-dried tomatoes mixed into the batter, and was stuffed with vegan cream cheese, vegan cheese, avocados, and hot sauce. Topped with fenugreek sprouts. IT WAS AMAZING.
After breakfast my friend and adventure-partner Kate came over, we mapped directions, and then hit the road. First stop was the hotel:
“Fur Never & Never” // On our way out the door, straw hat posse.
And what can I say about the LA Vegan Beer Fest? I mean really, what can I even say, about a perfect southern California day, and so many happy-go-lucky vegans, and nearly 50 breweries sampling their goods, and food trucks and live music and good friends and DAMN. I mean really, what could I possibly say?
This kombucha beer was the stand-out-of-the-day for me. It reminded me of a mild lambic framboise and it was DELICIOUS!
Tangerine IPA
My friend Instagrammed this picture which caught me looking super cranky . . .
. . . and this pic of Kate and I looking . . . well . . . we had definitely had some beer!
Music!
Sushi! These Dynamite Rolls were off the hook!
So apparently May 4th is officially Star Wars Day? As in “May the fourth be with you.”
The festival shut down by 530-6, and we were pretty hungry for some real food. So we high-tailed it down to Melrose for a little Thai feast:
Dinner // Night cap
All in all, one of the best damn days I’ve had in quite some time. Thank you Quarrygirl and everyone else who made this event happen. Can’t wait till next year!
Saturday
On Saturday morning we woke up bright and early and beelined back to SB. Damian had a pool tournament in LA, so he started driving down as we were driving up, and we met and swapped kid in the middle. Waits and I dropped Kate off and went straight to another birthday party!
We hung out at the party well into the afternoon, and had such a great time. Happy big #2, Gavin!
So Waits is verging on dropping his afternoon nap. Basically, when he takes the nap he stays up till 10:00 . . . 10:30 . . . or, like, 11:45 the other night? And um, NO. But when he skips the nap, it can be tough psychologically/emotionally. Still, it seems like it’s time.
So, we left the party and went on a little adventure, exploring downtown SB. We got coffee, and window shopped, and listened to a great street musician. It was lovely.
In the evening we met up with our friends at their place, for dinner and a soak in the hot tub (not in that order). I think a soak is pretty much the best way to cap off an incredible weekend, no?
Especially when said soak is followed by vegan quesadillas?
It was a long fun day and after dinner, Waits was DONE. He fell asleep on the ride home, well before sun down. Please let him not wake up at 5 am tomorrow . . .
And me? My Sunday night?
Well I’m here of course, photo-editing and writing this post, exhausted and totally blissed at the end of a killer weekend. See?
A good friend of mine sings a sweet, alt-country cover of the über-80′s Wall Of Voodoo jam, Lost Weekend (a spectacular song in it’s own right). It’s super catchy and it’s sort of been in my head for weeks, which is why I’m using a lyric to title this series – even though the original song is rather forlorn. Quite the opposite of my weekends these days, but never mind that. It’s a great title and really, aren’t they all? Lost, but never forgotten.
Friday
Last week was a hard one. A really hard one. I’ve had a lingering case of the sads, plus we’ve been fighting off a cold. And on top of that, preschool was on spring break which means Waits was home with me, which means my work was sidelined, which makes me a bit of a stress mess. Oi.
So needless to say, I was more than happy to say hello to Friday afternoon – the beginning of a damn good weekend. And we kicked it off right, when Waits woke up from his nap around 4. The first thing we did was make some juice!
This is Waits’s new favorite blend. Actually, since turning three he’s become increasingly picky with his vegetable intake, and this is one of the only juices he’ll drink right now. Luckily it’s packed full of goodness!
Cilantro and lime from up at the preschool, a bit of kale from my CSA, and tangerines off our tree. SO. GOOD.
We spent a lovely afternoon together, just the two of us, puttering about in the back yard. We planted a flower bed.
This is my dilapidated little house. GLAMOROUS. I know you’re jealous.
Flowers! Can’t wait till they really fill out. Snap dragons and ranunculus.
And then we took a little tricycle ride around the neighborhood, with Mr. Harley. Perfect spring weather.
That evening there was a simple dinner (that didn’t photograph well) and a lovely bath (but I’m not so into bath-pictures-of-kids on the internet, so no photos of that either) and then it was off to bed for the little guy. Once he was snoozing I got to work, late into the night . . .
Saturday
Saturday started off overcast and gloomy, but that didn’t stop us from taking our weekly stroll over to the Farmer’s Market. Besides, grey skies make great light for photography.
These kids were just adorable, and seriously talented too.
Blech.
From there, we were off to Waits’s preschool. I’m really lucky to have found The Greatest Preschool In The World (no seriously, it’s official) and I would do anything to make sure Waits goes there. Which is why, when we were getting all enrolled, I asked if there was any way we could do some sort of trade, maybe, to offset some tuition? When she agreed I was stoked, and when she proposed that I take on the school garden, I think I actually squealed.
So for the past few months, I’ve been putting together a vegetable plot. Or actually, a few vegetable plots. One is in full swing (kale, butter lettuce, swiss chard, cilantro, and broccoli) and another I’ve just seeded out (carrots, walla wallas, cantaloupe, and watermelon). And that’s just the beginning! There is so much space on that terraced hillside. BIG plans.
The preschool valley. The garden is on the hillside directly below, barely visible.
so miniature // so much weeding
I see you Mama!
On the way down from preschool I dropped Waits off with Damian. Back at home I quickly got to work grading papers, which I did for a few hours, until . . .
Porch. Coffee. Friends. Perfect.
One of my oldest and dearest friends was in town for the weekend. And I met her, on that porch, which belongs to another old and dear friend that I’ve recently reconnected with.
Gretchen (in town for the weekend).
Ingrid (keeper of the perfect porch).
If I tried to describe these two women to you, it would probably just sound like bragging, because it’s not possible to do without using words like “brilliant” and “visionary” and “multidimensional-genius-goddesses”.
It’s funny though, when you’ve known someone as long and as intimately as we’ve known each other. They saw me through my entire tumultuous twenties, saw me at my very worst – as I saw them at theirs. We watched each other make big mistakes. Laughed and cried and loved and hurt. Put each other on pedestals and gasped as we all tumbled down. Went through years-long periods of not even speaking, and at the end of all that . . . a porch, and a cup of coffee, and my heart is so very full for them. Life is funny and I am lucky. And that’s just that.
Blogger! (photo by Gretchen)
I was supposed to go home and work. And I was so close! I was really going to, but . . . well, Gretchen’s only in town for the weekend and dangit, she convinced me to come out to this BBQ. At least I put up a good fight.
Above.
Below.
And as the sun went down, the instruments came out – everything from an upright base, to guitars, to a beat up old harmonica. And I thought, “Yes, this is definitely where I’m supposed to be tonight.” Sometimes there’s just more important things than work, ya know?
Sunday
I woke up Sunday morning, rolled over, pulled my laptop into bed, and began working. And that’s where I stayed until the afternoon.
Tofu scramble topped with olive tapenade. I use this scramble recipe.
With enough work done to satisfy (sort of) my nagging sense of duty, I ventured out into the world. I don’t celebrate Easter, but I did have a party to attend!
My friends were throwing an “Art Party”, which is basically a way to get all of the amazing creative people they know in one place, to meet and mix and make creative connections. Which is awesome, because they know A LOT of amazingly talented people. It was also a way for Clovis, a photographer, to take a series of artist portraits, which he’s putting together for a show.
Our inspired hosts: Clovis, a photographer, Ingrid, a painter, and Terry, a musician.
Props for the photos.
Paintings everywhere, even on top of the fridge.
I put my camera down pretty early in the evening. Sometimes you just want to be in the moment. And it was a great moment, that stretched well into the night. We watched an experimental short film, listened to a noise dj, and took lots and lots and lots of portraits. It was an amazing night, full of amazing people. Definitely the perfect cap to an all-around amazing weekend.
What about you – did you have a good one? I hope so!
A good friend of mine sings a sweet, alt-country cover of the über-80′s Wall Of Voodoo jam, Lost Weekend (a spectacular song in it’s own right). Quite the opposite of my weekends these days, but never mind that. It’s a great title and really, aren’t they all? Lost, but never forgotten.
My new pal Duchess.
Friday
I didn’t really have any plans for Friday night, but when I was picking up Waits from preschool that afternoon, a new mom friend sort of *cough*margaritas*cough*-ed at me, and well golly. Golly!
We met up at her place that evening, after our boys had napped.
Hot tubs – not such a bad way to kick off the weekend!
For dinner I commandeered her kitchen and threw together a batch of hummus using some chickpeas I’d cooked up at home and brought along. We set out a spread (hummus tacos!) and dined while our boys ran naked like wild things, leaping from couches and generally making all sorts of mischief. It was a great night.
Saturday
Saturday mornings are for me and Waits. And the Farmer’s Market!
Hemp-seeded strawberries.
As I took this photo I thought “Hey, I recognize those red pants.” It was my friend from the night before!
More errands, and then back home.
Steamed rainbow chard and chickpeas topped with sprouts, kimchi, and smokey tahini dressing. *sigh*
After Waits wakes up from his nap, Damian takes him for the rest of the weekend. I spent the remainder of my Saturday, evening and well into the night, firmly planted here . . .
Did I ever tell you I grade college biology exams as [one of] my side jobs? Biochem – FUN! [sarcasm!]
. . . except for a much-needed break at dusk to hang on my neighbor’s porch for a bit. But yes, my wild Saturday night was made up of working and working and more working.
Sunday
Oh, hello St Patrick’s Day!
You know, I’ve never in my life gone out for St Paddy’s Day. Not once! But this year – well this is my year of musical revolution. And this is my year of grabbing life by the balls, if you’ll pardon such a ribald phrase. So color me Irish.
I started the day, however, with a hearty breakfast and a few more hours of work.
Breakfast Pudla with spinach and roasted red peppers, topped with Daiya and ‘cados, and sprouts. This was, hands down, the best Pudla I’ve ever made. EVER.
Mmmmmm, happy sloppy heaven on a plate.
Jasmine from the yard, stashed around the house, keeps the whole place smelling like sweet springtime.
I worked all morning and through the early afternoon, and then threw together a juice before heading out. Yes, it is totally ironic that I drink GREEN juice almost every day of my life, but on St. Paddy’s Day? RED, for the first time in ages.
Kale, cucumber, beet, tangerine, with a bit of ginger.
All tarted up and ready to rock n’ roll. Heading out to meet my friend – the extra juice I gifted to her and her man, because really, who doesn’t want more juice in their life?
Not juice.
One of my oldest and dearest. And man, what a set of pipes on that one.
A new-to-me band, the Big Jugs were a LOT of fun. That electric fiddle was off the hook!
My brilliant friend and her brilliant mother, who’s also a very old friend of mine. So great to see her!
And then . . . another bar for another round of The Wild Rover.
Where I ran into this cutie AGAIN, this time with his dad.
Then a quick hop back down to our original spot, to catch the final set. Plant-based protein snackage = a must-have for any vegan bar-hopper! (please note my green ring, in case you were wondering)
Last up, The Mutineers, who just so happen to be my new favorite local band. Yay!
AMAZING
My favorite song:
