My girl turned 8 in Dec and I’m finding it to be a very different age than the previous ones. So big-little, you know? Starting to see so much mini-teenager in her, and yet all the little-kid snuggles and need for parental love have ramped up too. It’s made her father and me step back and re-envision our parenting styles, taking new and different approaches for her ever-shifting moods. I think it’s been great for us all – made us more patient parents, and (I really, really hope and trust) teaching our daughter again and again, moment by moment, that we are really and truly here for her no matter what.

The scavenger hunt was soooo fun, all the kids loved it. The key is to make it pretty simple to figure out, it’s more about running from one spot to the next, than it is about figuring out the “clue”. A simple rhyme with just a few lines that’s not too obscure to hint them towards the next thing. They love it and they get soooo excited running all over the place. And then of course at the end, prizes! We did vegan candy, temporary tattoos, a little toys in pretty paper boxes with “gems” on them. It was awesome!

It was a huge hit of a cake, very not “healthy vegan eww” if you know what I mean. All the kiddos loved it!

This is a heart wrenching time in a mother’s life. This was beautifully written, as always, and BTW “Happy Birthday Waits.” I’ve been reading your blog for years and you never disappoint and you share just enough emotion with us, your readers.
I am in a similar space as a mother. I have a 15, 10, and 8 year old and I think it is so much more scary to watch as they grow older and you realize that you can’t wear them, and protect them, like you could when they were so small.
