Isn’t Long Beach just the best? I lived there for three years, and I really miss it. It’s all the really great stuff about LA, but artsier and beachier. If you haven’t checked it out, next time you’re down there, walk around the 4th street arts district. Cool area and a really great indy movie theater.

Fascinating article on minimalism. I would love to hear more of your thoughts on this topic. I adopted the philosophy a few years ago and it has truly helped me with my anxiety. I no longer buy things that I don’t love or need anymore, it’s been very freeing to me. And I no longer feel that I need to buy things just to fit in with society. I just love your blog Sayward…you always make me think ❤️

Thanks for the link – it echos a lot of what I think about the topic! I feel simultaneously like it’s incredibly pretentious and wasteful and consumerist idea (“just throw away anything you’re done with since you can always buy it again later” – almost a direct quote from Marie Kondo) and ick for the environment. But at the same time, clearing out some of my kitchen cabinets has in fact cleared up space to really use the items I like the most (but were inaccessible for the clutter) and I like trying to make my home space more user-friendly (ie less cluttered). {Side note, did you hear the quote from some exec at IKEA saying that our culture was at “peak stuff” right now and the NPR interviewer asked “so you’re going to stop expanding stores and products then?” and she was all like “UHHHH…..” Hilarity.}

Obama is brighter and fresher than I would have expected. Citrus and jasmine; not enough musk. Michelle is *exactly* how it should smell: smooth and strong and sexy as fuck, but cool and not trying.

Anti-minimalism I will have to gather my thoughts on. Int he meantime, this article says a lot about what bothers me:

I want to hear what those incenses smell like! We’ve been reviving our incense habit lately (stopped while my girl was a baby for lung health) and I love it. Our fave is inspired by the sun – something we bought boxes and boxes of at an Indian market years ago.

You know, I also want to hear more about anti-minimalism. I am very much of two minds about the minimalism trend, so if you think you have a whole post about it I bet that’s something we’d all love to hear your thoughts on.

Loving this week: my outdoor seeds are finally sprouting! // my husband just built me a gorgeous new compost bin! // running (I’m back up to 2 miles after a looooooong hiatus)// it’s spring break week for me, so I get a few days to do my own work (instead of teaching) before heading to LA for a conference // going to see a great vegan pal there and we’re going to eat all the food in LA!
