WOWWW!!!!!!!!!! I am so happy you wrote this article!!!! So incredibly underrated, balance is. I totally believe balance in terms of mind, body and soul is so important, and its what missing in so many peoples lives who are struggling to be healthy. Everyone is so extreme, finding peace in punishing themselves into perfection and not feeling adequate when perfection isn't met. I've had such trouble with this myself, and I found that being extreme also went hand-in-hand in hating myself. With balance comes self-love and acceptance, once I started to love myself and be kind and understanding, I was able to find balance and realize why I was choosing to be so extreme. Thank you for this amazing article! You are my FAVORITE vegan there is!!!

Jem, I was just going to make these same points about GM foods. I find it so frustrating that people lump ALL GM food into the same "bad" category, which is the precise antithesis of this (well-written, except for that point) post. Some GM technology exists to make certain crops resistant to some pesticides, and those are the ones that give the rest a bad rap. However, there are SO MANY other types and reasons for developing GM technology, many of which alleviate hunger in developing worlds, target disease, seek to eliminate both pesticide use and food waste, etc. The reasons are so variable and many, if not most, are not harmful to the environment or to the consumers' health. This, coupled with the general public's lack of knowledge, is why I cannot support the labeling initiatives.

FYI, I have a PhD in environmental biology and teach this topic at an environmental liberal arts college. If you want to read a great primer into the science of this subject I really recommend reading Tomorrow's Table.

Hi Sayward, my thoughts...part of this post made me sad and bothered me, and lots of it I agree with. Curiously, most everyone seems to be complementary and it doesn't seem too controversial. The part that made me sad was about Vani Hari, aka Food Babe. While she's not perfect, I respect her and I'm glad she's out there creating more awareness about food and the food industry. I, like most everyone, didn't have a clue about GMOs until a few years ago (4), and I was floored when I learned about it (similar to learning about factory farming). If this has become a business for her (you seemed to imply in a comment that she's solely about being a business person and that didn't sit right with me), it didn't start out that way, and maybe she's fortunate to be able to make a living doing something positive. This has happpened to many others with an online presence. And, I think she can talk about these issues without having a deep background in science, and sadly "science" isn't just neutral these days. I found it odd that a number of the comments here focused on GMOs and pointing out that "yeah...science says GMOs are fine" . This post wasn't about GMOs for one thing, and the fact is, we really don't have clear knowledge about them (though I certainly feel they are "bad" and unnecessary and I avoid them as much as I can). So Vani Hari talks about GMOs and says we should avoid them. That's good, in my view. I also try to eat cleanly and locally as much as possible, for several reasons, but sometimes I'll get things like Chinese food that likely has GMO oils and unorganic veggies and some form of MSG/flavor enhancers. I takes money and effort be to perfect about food. I doubt that the many people who read her blog are that perfect either. I just think it's okay, actually beneficial, that there are people like Vani Hari creating more awareness. It gets discouraging when so many people seem to not give a crap about what they are eating, where it comes from, and all those labeling iniatives that got voted down. I am glad Vani Hari is doing what she can to help create some change and awareness (though she's not perfect). Thank you for letting me share my thoughts. I always enjoy your blog. Best to you...
