Unfortunately for me, I lived on a campus where no cooking implements were allowed in our rooms and, for the first little while, there was no fridge. I’d gone vegan in my final two years of high school but when I moved on campus, I had to go vegetarian again. Needless to say, I survived one semester on campus before I got my own apartment and could start cooking. I went back to vegan the day I moved in :) Great advice as well and very fun to read!

I’ve been a veg for a bit over a year now and heading towards being a vegan while in my last semester of college. Thanks for the additional tips though Sara! I wish I’d had more info like this earlier on. Though the two cookbooks you’ve mentioned are something I’m totally digging right now!

@Rea, I TOTALLY KNOW what you’re talking about. I had a vegan friend in dorm living, and she opted for traditional meals because of the school’s good culinary rep, and was so disappointed!

Urrgh, dorm meal plan stuff really sucks! My girlfriend lives at a dorm where they force her to buy a meal plan for food she can’t eat since the only vegan options are some yucky non-organic fruits and. . .well, even the salad has cheese. We’re moving in together off-campus this December, but we’re still fighting tooth and nail so that future students of our university will never have to squander hard-earned dollars and not be able to eat the full meals that they paid for!

What a fantastic post, Sara! Wish I’d had some guidance when I got my own place when I was 18, living in a college town smack-dab in the heart of the Midwest.
