[...] Last week I did a bit of research on composting, we already composted fruits, veggies, bread, etc., but I found a couple websites stating that you could also compost paper products (kleenx, paper towel, splenda packets) coffee grounds, coffee filters, shredded cardboard boxes, and our ferrets litter (we put that in a pile on its own because we don’t want to use the dirt made from composting their poop, since they are meat eaters!). We have cut down on the amount of outgoing garbage greatly. I will post the websites, that I have found most helpful, at the end of this point as there is too much to type here for me! I have also started to try to bike more often if I want to go somewhere that is just in town (bonus: It also saves money on gas!). The next time I need to do laundry I am going to be trying hand washing as that saves electricity and gets me outside for even longer, I already use the clothes line to dry my clothes but I want to start using it even more often! On the same topic of washing clothes and something that I want to try, I would like to start trying to make my own laundry detergent and cleaning products. Though I am still using normal (not tested on animals) shampoo, I would like to change how I wash my clothes and the furniture around my house because companies ask so much for a simple bottle of detergent or pledge for the bottle/can to just end up in the garbage or recycle, whereas if I was to make my own I could put it into a reusable container that I can just refill whenever it is empty. I will keep people posted on my progress, and post any cleaner recipes that I find/discover!
I saw a comment below that breast milk (or any other meat or dairy should you find yourself wanting to toss any) can't be composted. This is half true. If it's an aerobic compost, animal products are no good because they can't be broken down. In an anaerobic compost, however, you can toss dairy (including human milk) and even meat. This was good news to me when I didn't use up all the milk I'd thawed for the babysitter, I hate to throw it away!

If they are pets, I would say it's okay as long as you let them "cook" in the pile for a *long* time. Wood shavings take a long time to break down anyway, so this should be fine. =)

There's a better use for corks than compost! There are quite a few ways to recycle corks popping up. Here's a link to one: http://recork.org/

If you don't want to send them away, you can always cut them in half and make yourself a cork board. (I will be doing this once I have a house of my own -- we'll need a place to post notes, grocery lists, etc!)
