I make a lotion out of coconut oil, olive oil, shea and cocoa butter.....and I add beeswax if I want a more solid "bar" to rub on my skin. What I have found is that if I use a sugar scrub in the shower (1 part VCO, 2 parts sugar, drizzle olive oil, scent it however you like), then at night I do the lotion bar. My skin has never been softer and I live in a gross air, gross dry, all around gross city. But my skin is baby bottom soft. I use a similar concoction on my face on days the coconut, argan, or olive oil isn't enough. Works amazingly well. The recipe is on wellnessmama.com. She's not veggie, but she has some great DIY home care recipes that are, and they are like gold to me!

You can easily make your own lotion. I use a nice and easy recipe from another blog here: http://asonomagarden.wordpress.com/2009/02/26/how-to-make-handmade-handlotion-w-label-download/

Rather than olive oil I have been using coconut oil. Plus I throw in a chunk of cocoa butter and it thickens it up a little and make it more moisturizing I think! Plus I choose my own scent.

Downside: If you don't use it (DO NOT make more than 1 jar at a time) it eventually starts growing a little something. I made 2 at once and left one with a lid on it for a few weeks. When I went back it had little brown spots on top. I have had no issues other than that.

1/4 cup emulsifying wax
1/4 cup olive oil
1 1/4 cup water
Essential oil (optional)

In pint sized jar melt wax and oil together (I nuke mine for about 1 minute or so). Once melted add essential oils then water. Mix together well and let sit (I also mix mine a few times before it gets 'done' setting up...don't know why.)

I stumbled onto your site via pinterest... :) And, though I know this is an older post, I had to share my absolute favorite commercial lotion... Shea Moisture Organic Raw Shea Chamomile and Argan Oil Healing Baby Lotion. Long name, but a beautiful product!!! For $10 at Walgreens. No parabens, phthalates, paraffin, gluten, propylene glycol, mineral oil, synthetic fragrance, PABA, synthetic color, DEA, or sulfates... no animal testing or animal products at all.

I originally bought this on a whim for our baby... and it is my favorite! I also use it as my facial lotion... it is the only product I've found so far that moisturizes my face with the perfect balance, without being greasy, or leaving my skin still parched and tight. BEAUTIFUL product. :)

Why is it that natural good for you personal care stuff costs so much MORE than the chemical junk personal care products?! You would think that natural products would cost LESS since they are closure to nature than something made in a lab :/ When I was a starving student i got all my personal care stuff from the 99cent store. I SHUDDER to think of what chemicals I slathered on during that time!

I like to mix up my own oil concoction, 1/2 jojoba oil and 1/2 sweet almond oil. Not a lotion, but moisturizes so well, not greasy and absorbs quickly. Give it a try sometime!

UNREFINED VIRGIN COCONUT OIL. It will NOT smell rancid! Shortly after application you can't even smell anything. I use it for myself, and both of my small children. It is wonderful. My kids tend toward (minor) skin issues... dryness, flakes, very easily irritated/chapped. And overnight this clears their flares right up. I even use it on the baby's bottom before bed to fend off diaper rash. And on my lips as a balm. And it's great on toast!! ;)

Heads up...

Add Noah's Naturals to the "omg grease bucket" list. Not sure if it's vegan, but it is organic.

We live in a VERY non-organic-friendly area. So hard to find anything organic/natural/chemical free, so I was stoked to find this stuff since I can't use conventional skin care products, but sadly it's thick, it smells rather like Crisco and applies about the same I'd imagine Crisco would.

Ugh, the lotion problem. I actually spent the weekend trying to make my own lotion, so reading this was pretty timely. Let me tell you, I had a HARD time getting it to work. Apparently lotion-making requires a lot of trial and error. I got a couple of good batches, though.
