Last year I tried sprinkling some cinnamon on top of my planted seeds. I heard somewhere that it helps to kill whatever is in the soil that causes damping off. It seemed to work… (or maybe I just got lucky!) =)

Just wondering if you ever heard of this tip.

@ Kristin – Good luck to you! I use fluorescents to supplement the natural light and they do seem to work well. Are you planting already?? I guess it’s almost that time again isn’t it? Wow, time flies . . . exciting!

It is impossible for me to get to a south-facing window that has sunshine, as all of my windows that face south are shaded by my front porch. So… I will be using my handy-dandy fluorescent workshop lights, and a-growing I shall go.

@ TC – Yeah, you know every time I try doing something myself at home, I’m amazed at much easier it is than I ever expected! Starting seeds is just another awesome project I’ll never miss out on again. Nothing fancy, lots of fun.

@ A – Aw, not so much! Maybe an hour of initial work, then daily watering. I guess it depends on perspective, just like anything. =)

Last year I tried just plunking seeds down in the dirt. Didn’t work so well, although some of them took. I had no idea so much was involved…

Very nice article on starting seeds indoors. You laid it out plain and simple, and you also provided proof that one doesn’t need those extravagant grow light shelving units that look like they’re made for the space shuttle. We’ll be starting ours soon. I use a very, and I mean VERY basic grow light shelving set-up. As a matter of fact, if you’d like instructions on how to make your own, just stop by my blog and let me know.
