@ Rebekah - I know the author of the Master Cleanse says not to take any vitamins during the cleanse, because t's useless (they're just washed away). As far as medications, I have no experience there. I'd say that's something to talk to your doctor about.

Sayward,
have you ever been on any medications when doing the Master Cleanse? I'm interested and want to do it, but I'm on two prescriptions right know (one long term, and one will be out in a week) and I also take a multivitamin and Biotin.
Have you done any research on doing the Master Cleanse when taking medication? What's your opinion on it? I guess it all depends on the meds, but I guess I should talk to my doctor before doing it.

Twice a year my yoga class does a one day super salt water cleanse, which sort of interests me and terrifies me all at once. But my body has definitely been feeling sluggish, so I'm thinking of giving it a try this spring. I'm vegetarian, nearly vegan (the only dairy I eat is milk in my morning cappuccino--yes, I'm addicted to that!), but still not feeling as "vibrant" as I think I could. Anyway, thanks for the great post, well, great blog in general. Lots of wonderful information!

I've been planning to do a cleanse in 2011 and am currently coordinating with a co-worker so we can do it together. In the mean time I was planning just to reduce dairy and increase my intake of raw foods. After a few days of mindful eating it became seriously obvious how wrong dairy is. My body has been telling me all along I just wasn't listening! So last week I cut out all dairy, I'm 5 days dairy free and have had intense, terrible headaches. I wonder if some of the headaches you and others note (and are typically attributed to caffeine withdrawl) are really (or partially) dairy withdrawl? I had no idea it even existed, but after 3 days of headaches I googled it and sure enough, it's typical, crazy!

@ S. - I think that if you return to eating a healthful and well-balanced diet after cleansing, that you won't be any more likely to gain more weight. I also think that a cleanse can really help to focus ones healthy eating intentions. So, I'd say go for it now if you feel ready! A cleanse is not to be used for weight loss purposes, but the emotional and personal knowledge gained while cleansing can certainly renew a dedication to health, and thus healthy weight loss.

I am interested in trying the master cleanse. But I am also trying to lose weight, and I am concerned if I cleanse before I've lost all the weight I want to lose, that I will gain more back after I stop cleansing. Is that true in your experience? I want to specify that I want to do the cleanse for cleansing purposes, NOT to lose weight. I am just way to addicted to coffee.

@ cait - I did not the first time, but I think it would have helped. For my second cleanse I was vegan and it was SO much easier. I'd recommend trying to eat a high-raw diet for maybe the week leading into the cleanse.

This blog is great! I just had a quick question... did you do any kind of preparation food-wise before starting the cleanse? Did you cut things out before the start of the fast? Thanks!

@ BunnygotBlog - You should NOT use honey (or agave, or Stevia, or any other sweetener). Most importantly, honey is high-glycemic and will cause a blood sugar spike, which is then of course followed by a crash. Maple syrup is slow release and will not cause your body to cycle through this harsh up-and-down. As well, maple syrup has a specific composition that makes it ideal for this application.

It's very important to use 100% pure maple syrup when cleansing; please don't deviate from this.
